Hilliard Bruce 2008 Pinot Noir “Moon” Santa Rita Hills

Hilliard Bruce Vineyards

For those already familiar with Paul Lato, I do not need to tell you that this man knows how to make wine – and can he!  Paul is the winemaker at this new venture in the Santa Rita Hills.  Only 160 cases of the Premier release were produced.  Paul selected the clones for this soon-to-be gem – Pommard and Dijon clones 667, 777, 114, 115 were used in this amazing wine.  Those familiar with Burgundy know that Pommard gives it a more inky-like color and density.  The various Dijon clones add aromatics, flavors and body.

Everyone always asks me to which wine do I compare a certain wine to  – sorry this is a Paul Lato wine and it is awesome.  It will stand on its own two legs and you will not regret it. The wine’s aromatics and flavors jump out of the glass, and with Paul’s attention to detail one knows that you are in for a real treat.  Hurry because with only 160 cases produced if you blink once it will pass you by.  This wine received a 93 Point rating from Steven Tanzer – Parker might be higher!

Holiday Wine Tasting Recap

The holiday tasting was yet another great success, and my apologies for those who I had to turn away – it helps to make those RSVP’s ASAP!

Our line-up was amazing, and the crowd was excited to meet many star-studded winery owners and representatives. I need to acknowledge all of them – Alondra, Arbe Garbe, Bella, Buccio, Clos de la Briderie, Coho, DuMol, Dunn, Field Recordings, Five Russians, Fisticuffs, Gain Bay, Hoopes, Hoopla, Inherit the Sheep, Monthuys, O’Dwyer, Paloma, Ramian, Sans Liege, Sierra Madre, Solitude, Stephane Coquileette and Talisman.

The wines were showing beautifully, and of course there were some that were the “Wine-of-the-Tasting.” In the Cabernet section, Coho Headwaters and Inherit the Sheep were tops, and the “value-priced” Gain Bay did nicely! The Coho and Paloma Merlots were very well liked as well. Buccio Chardonnay in the “economy” category, Solitude in the “mid-priced” category and DuMol in the “upper-echelon” category were the fan favorites. In the “Rhone varietal” category, Sans Liege “The Offering” was the go-to wine (I am almost sold out now, due to the tasting), as was DuMol’s Syrah. On the Pinot front Talisman “Gunsalus” went over very well. Both Champagnes, Monthuys and Stephane Coquilette, made lots of friends and many orders. The surprise of the night was the two Arbe Garbe white wines – The Arbe Garbe “White blend” and their Ribolla Gialla were both stunners.

The crowd was great, the wines were great – and again, to those who did not make it, you missed out. It was an amazing evening. Our next big tasting event, the Valentines Day Tasting, will be held on February 12 – don’t wait too long to RSVP!

It is still not too late to ship in time for the Holidays, so send in your last-minute Holiday orders as soon as possible! For those shipping to the “cold” areas, we will need to ship only by 1 and 2 day AIR to avoid freezing in transit!

Thank you again for a wonderful year and Happy Holidays.
Frank

The Wolf is a Nice Guy After All!

Karen Culler has crafted yet again two amazing wines from this stunning estate. I taste a good 2000 wines each year, and both of these ended up on my Top ten list for 2010! The production of both these puppies is very limited, so I highly recommend that you jump on this offer now.

Wolf Estate Cabernet SauvignonWolf 2007 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
Retail 80.00 – GGWC 74.99 (six or more 72.50)

Black cherries and coffee aromas followed by forward black fruits and cassis framed by balanced yet powerful tannins and a full mid-palate. Richly extracted and with a long lush finish this is a classic Wolf Family Cabernet Sauvignon reflecting its Western St. Helena terroir. Balanced and well integrated the 2007 has great potential for aging. The cornerstone of Wolf Family Vineyards, this wine is always 100% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. 275 cases produced.

Wolf Sauvignon Blanc Wolf 2009 Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Tres Hermanos
Retail 35.00- GGWC 29.99 (six or more 27.99)

From the narrow sloping vineyard that spans the property, the Sauvignon Blanc is a blend of Musque Clone and Sauvignon Blanc Clone 1. Fermented in small stainless steel barrels and a single new barrel, the wine is aged on the lees to encourage a hint of creamy texture to balance the fresh, crisp flavors. A unique warm climate Sauvignon Blanc with its pear, herbal, mineral and citrus aromas, Picked early to encourage the natural acidity, along with the lower alcohol, livens the fresh palate. 112 cases produced.

Stewart 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon

Stewart Wine Cellars

Paul Hobbs has turned this little winery into a real gem.  This release was sourced from three top Napa Valley vineyards (45% Stagecoach, 29% Beckstoffer IV and 26% State Lane).

Stewart 2006 Cabernet SauvignonThis wine is firm, dense and powerful, yet very elegant!  The wines aromas jump out of the glass for this well-textured Cabernet!  The nose opens to blackberry, black cherry and subtle vanilla aromas from very high quality French oak barrels. In the mouth the wine starts fat, fleshy and dense with French oak well integrated into the ripe grapiness. Flavors of blackberries, chocolate, coffee and hints of dark caramel are layered until the end of the long finish. The black fruit and barrel spice are balanced with proper hints of varietal sauvignon herbs. Tannins are very fine, firm but not gripping, enveloped in the fat, dense mouthfeel and only needing time to soften.

Stewart 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley – Retail $62.00 – GGWC $49.99
For a limited time and while supplies last, purchase a full case and pay only $47.50 per bottle, plus you receive FREE SHIPPING!!!

Alondra 2007 Cabernet – Napa’s secret vineyard (not) revealed!

Alondra 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

The Alondra winemakers (both of whom are sommeliers at San Francisco’s Boulevard restaurant) crafted an amazing, well-priced wine from this stunning vineyard source! This is a very secretive wine! I am not allowed to tell you where the fruit comes from, but I can tell you that it has to do with a successful career in the NFL! I can also tell you that the source is an amazing 10 acre site in the Yountville district of the Napa Valley.

On the nose, one is greeted with gobs of black currant, cassis and cocoa powder aromas. On the palate this lush, densely concentrated wine reveals classic Napa Valley black stone fruit with a touch of chocolate and a touch of spice. The palate is expressive and flavorful, with the rich fruit profile beautifully balanced by gravelly earth and refined, but silky tannins. With a production of 200 cases, I can tell you that this one will not last long!

Alondra 2007 Cabernet, Yountville Napa Valley – Retail 44.00 – GGWC 37.50

Elizabeth Spencer ’07 Cabernet – An Amazing Wine

Elizabeth Spencer Wines

Each with a long and notable history in the world of fine wines, the husband and wife team of Spencer Graham and Elizabeth Pressler formed Elizabeth Spencer Wines in 1998 with the goal of creating wines of intensity without excess weight, in a model of purity, persistence and length. Together with winemaker Matthew Rorick, they “…make wines to drink — inviting wines that we and our friends (and by extension, our customers) truly enjoy”

Elizabeth Spencer 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon This latest release offers us an amazing wine at an amazing price. Deep magenta in color. The nose explodes with aromas of cassis, cracked pepper and a touch of spice. A wine of great structure and grip with remarkable palate presence and focused flavors of black plum cobbler and Bing cherry. Balanced natural acidity lends a youthful brightness and indicates that the wine will age gracefully.

The “Prisoner” escapes again!

Orrin Swift 2009 "Prisoner"It has become a major problem in the Napa Valley, but Orin Swift cannot be kept under lock and key. He recently escaped from the vineyard’s detention cellar. I have been told that he will be captured just in time for his formal sentencing (a.k.a. new release) on November 2 – Call it an Election Day Special!

The wine is outstanding, and as always, Dave Phinney had me sign a sworn statement not to reveal the varietals and vineyards used for this blend!

If you want to take advantage of our pre-sale offer of Orrin Swift 2009 Prisoner at only $35.99 per bottle, do it now. You will receive FREE SHIPPING on a FULL CASE PURCHASE. (Usually reserved for purchases of $500.00 or more.) CALL ME DIRECTLY to get this offer! 415-337-4083.

I still have small amounts of Orrin Swift 2009 Abstract in stock as well. ($24.99)

Tor “Mast” 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

Tor "Mast" 2007 Cabernet SauvignonOn the nose there is big, rich blackberry followed by notes of tar and currants. On the palate this wine is sneaky with a long finish. It begins with a very rich, sweet entry and though packed with tannin, it never shows those tannins – absolutely palate coating with venison, smoke, tobacco and cloves. The very ripe, sweet tannins allow the wine to truly coat the palate with richness.

Extremely well balanced, this wine should age gracefully for years to come. If consumed in the next couple of years, I highly recommend a few hours (or better yet, one day) of decanting.  Only 264 cases produced.

Showket Vineyards – Winery of the week.

I met up with the Showket folks this week and was happily impressed with their 2007 portfolio. This neighbor of Dalla Valle (at one point they shared the same winemaker – Heidi Barrett) has been producing some amazing wines for the past 15 years. Today with Russell Bevan at the helm it seems that they have kicked things into a higher gear! Russell’s own wines have been receiving high scores from Robert Parker (95+ Points, sourced from the Showket vineyards!).  I foresee Showket to get some high scores as well! The 2007 releases from Showket might be their best effort yet to date. As it was the case with previous vintages, Showket’s production is limited, so one would snooze and they would pass you by.

Showket Sangiovese2007 Showket Sangiovese, Estate Oakville Napa Valley

Retail 40.00 – GGWC 36.00 – Buy SIX or more $ 33.00

2007 was a perfect vintage for many wineries, ditto for Showket.  From the second you first pour this wine, it demands your attention with a dark ruby color and aromatics which jump from the glass. This is a big concentrated wine, loaded with flavorful fruit and well-balanced acidity. It has a compelling nose of black cherry, plum, and vibrant spices. It has a lively texture that makes it a perfect accompaniment to traditional Italian cuisine.

2007 Showket Asante Sana, Estate Oakville Napa Valley

Showket Asante SanaRetail 44.00 – GGWC 39.99 – Buy SIX or more $ 36.00

The Asante Sana is Showket’s “Super Tuscan” from Napa Valley. It is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine starts of with a vibrant aroma of spice and seasoned fruit. On the initial palate one is greeted by a Brunello-like taste and texture, flowing into the mid-palate one experiences a hint more Napa Cab-like black stone fruit. As it is the case with its Italian ancestors this wine has rich, velvety tannins and a vibrant texture that make it a fabulous wine to pair with a wide range of cuisines from grilled meats to delicate pastas and seafood. This wine is showing very well now and will continue to gain complexity for many years to come. 400 cases produced!

2007 Showket Estate Cabernet, Oakville Napa Valley

Showket Estate CabernetRetail 70.00 – GGWC 65.00 – BUY SIX 54.99

The 2007 Estate Cabernet might be the most complex one the Showkets have ever produced. Rich cherry, blackberry and plum fruit exude from the glass. In addition to the hallmark cassis flavors the wine displays chocolate, mocha, black currant and slighty spicy notes. The infusion of 10% Cabernet Franc adds aromatics of violet and increases the round full mouthfeel. Fine-grained, silky tannins linger on the finish. Its seductive palate is intense, complex and richly textured.  Winemaker Russell Bevan (Bevan Cellars Cabernet, 95 Points Robert Parker).

Chappellet 2007 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon – 97 Points!

Chappellet Pritchard Hill 2007 Cabernet SauvignonPritchard Hill has been the source for some of the most amazing Cabernets produced in the Napa Valley. The 2007 Chappellet Prichard Hill is just another example of how amazing this site really is!

“77% Cabernet Sauvignon; 12% Petit Verdot; 8% Malbec; 3% Merlot. Leaping out of the glass with its intensely fruity, keenly focused, layered aromas of black currants, hints of blackberries and crème caramel all tightly wrapped up in youthful vivacity that screams ‘aging potential’, this deep and dramatic effort delivers an equally full measure of generous yet barely evolved flavor on the palate. Its full and supple yet somewhat fleshy palate-feel is may invite early
drinking, but its underlying structure insures that it will improve for years to come.”

Wine Spectator Insider Review:
“Sleek, rich, intense and beautifully balanced, with a complex mix of black currant and black cherry, plus red and black licorice. Firm, focused, expansive and layered, ending with classic Bordeaux-like cedar, tobacco and cigar box notes. Drink now through 2020.”

Chappellet 2007 Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon — 97 Points!
Retail 140.00 GGWC 129.99

Spottswoode 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon – 99 points!

SpottswoodeThe 2006 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was a phenomenal wine in its own right, and the 2007 takes things to another level entirely. Robert Parker gives this rare beauty 99 points and overflows with praise saying:

“…the 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon may well be the finest Cabernet Sauvignon I have ever tasted from Spottswoode. Blended with 3% Cabernet Franc, the production is small. This opulent wine offers up loads of blue and black fruits intermixed with licorice, a hint of lead pencil shavings, and of course, the telltale floral notes that seem to be a part of this estate vineyard. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, but seamless, rather exuberant and flashy by Spottswoode’s standards, but so pure, deep, and rich, one gets the impression that if Chateau Margaux were making Cabernet Sauvignon in St. Helena , it might well taste like this. There is virtually no noticeable oak, given the extravagant richness of the wine, and the balance and elegance, combined with the sensational texture, power, and length, are awesome. This should be a historic Cabernet Sauvignon to drink over the next 30+ years”

With a production of only 2000 cases, and glowing reviews from all corners, this wine will be snatched up in a hurry.  At the moment, my special pricing is such that I cannot advertise it on the website and orders for the Spottswoode 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon are being taken by phone only.

Shane Wine Cellars

Shane FinleyEntering the wine industry less than 9 years ago as a harvest intern, Shane Finley has literally started at the bottom and worked his way to the top. After spending several seasons as an intern in California, Australia, and the Northern Rhône, Shane became Cellar Master at Copain Custom Crush. While there he had the opportunity to work closely with many notable winemakers including  Dumol, Carlisle, Pisoni Estate and Copain. He later took positions as Assistant Winemaker for Paul Hobbs Winery and then Associate Winemaker at Kosta Browne Wines.

Today Shane continues to work with Michael Browne as well as being owner and winemaker of his own Shane Wine Cellars. A wine-making philosophy which was nurtured around the dinner table and vineyards of Pierre Gaillard has matured and coalesced into a striking series of wines in the Rhône tradition.

Shane Syrah 07 "Unknown"Shane’s  incredibly pleasing 2007 Syrah, “Unknown,” was one of the surprise favorites at our 5th Anniversary Wine Tasting celebration last week.

“Freakishly dark: think magenta tinged squid ink. Intense raspberry, boysenberry, kirsch, slate, and violets explode upon opening. A luscious core is accentuated with dark chocolate, plum, white pepper, espresso, and crème de cassis. Without notice, firm tannins mingle with succulent acidity and shoot through the mid-palate. A lasting finish leaves your palate seduced.” -Shane’s Notes

Of the White Wines we featured at our Aug #WineTasting, the Page Cellars 09 Sauvignon Blanc was the clear favorite ~ http://ow.ly/2ziEF

5th Anniversary Wine TastingWe had people from all over California (Fresno, Santa Rosa, Redding, San Mateo, etc,), and some folks as far as Washington DC, Connecticut and Illinois – just to attend this event. Thank you very much!

I also need to thank my wife for always being on my side, and for assisting me with this event.

We will continue our series of wine tasting events, the next one TBA sometime in mid to late October, and of course the “big one” Holiday Wine Tasting Event in December. Thank you again for your continued support. And as always, please feel free to give me a call if you ever have a question about any of the wines I offer or need any assistance.

It’s Official: Red wine heals broken hearts!

Everyone knows that red wine is a key component of any romantic evening, and a glass of fine wine can sooth even the greatest heartbreak. But who could have guessed that it can play a role in healing physical damage to the human heart as well?

The Journal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine published an article last week stating their findings that in their efforts to use stem cells to heal heart damage, the presence of reservatrol, one of the component ingredients of red wine, greatly increased their rate of success! They found that the stem cells were more likely to survive and the wound area experienced less stress when exposed to reservatrol in cardiac regeneration experiments on lab rats.

Where do I sign up for the human research group?

Leviathan 2008 Proprietary Red

Leviathan 2008 Proprietary RedAndy Erickson is the winemaker for Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle, Ovid, Arietta, and others.  Andy teamed up with his wife Annie Favia-Erikson and her family to create Leviathan. This 2008 Red is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Franc and 7 % Syrah.

The dictionary lists the definition of Leviathan as “something unusually large or  formidable.”  I can say that this latest release is just that! Perfumes of star anise, paprika, and thyme draw into the glass. Flavors of cherries and blackberry jam rush over the palate, with smooth tannins and intense fruit lingering on a lengthy finish. A sizeable wine, the newest incarnation of Leviathan is a hedonistic delight now, and should provide added excitement in years to come – but why wait?

Go even greener by recycling your wine cork!

Cork ReHarvestI think that pretty much everyone knows that you can recycle the glass from your wine bottles, but few people realize that the cork from your bottle can also be recycled! There are dozens of well known locations to drop off your glass bottles in any city in the country and most towns with a recycling program will accept glass as well.  But try to recycle that cork and you may have to dig a little harder.

Unlike screw top caps and plastic bottle stoppers, natural cork is a very easily recycled material. While recycled cork is not used to make new wine corks, there are many other products that your old wine cork can be recycled to make. On top of that, cork is a 100% biodegradeable material as well as being one of the most responsibly and sustainably harvested forest products available.

Fortunately, cork recycling is becoming more common in many parts of the US and Canada as well as the rest of the world. Cork ReHarvest is a relatively new non-profit organization that was formed in 2008 to educate, encourage, and facilitate the recycling of cork products. In doing so, they aim to both preserve the incredible biodiversity of the world’s cork forests as well as reduce the waste created by the nearly 13 billion natural corks that are produced each year.

By requesting wine that is closed with natural cork and by recycling the cork you use, you encourage wineries to utilize more eco-friendly materials and can have a big impact on the environment as well. To find a cork recycling drop box in your area, you can visit Cork ReHarvest’s website at http://corkreharvest.org/finder.php.

Pre-Sale: O’Dwyer 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon from the O’Dwyer estate is a worthy follow-up to their inaugural release. This wine seems to have a little more intensity and fruit compared to the 2006 vintage, which went over well I have to say.

The wine kicks off with an amazing aroma of black stone fruit and a touch of mocha and vanilla. It is full in body with lush and bright blackberry fruit on the mid palate. Leading into the long finish, this wine is well structured with gently, silky showing tannins that will give this youngster a good prognosis on cellar life!

Again a very limited production wine and a Golden Gate Wine Cellars EXCLUSIVE!

For a very limited time, you can acquire this very unique wine at special pricing of only $68.00 (Retail $75) or $65.00 when you purchase a full case. Because of its limited availability, this wine is not yet available on our website, so you must CALL to place your order. 415-337-4083
