The world is (not) ending… But it IS selling out fast!

Jonathan Maltus Jonathan Maltus created his second pool of new wines from some amazing vineyards in the Napa Valley. The entire production of his previous World’s End offerings entirely sold out within a matter of months! (I have a small handful reserved if you are quick to give me a call) That is a strong testament to the quality of these wines and this production is sure to go quickly as well. Not withstanding the high demand, these wines are still very price friendly! Jonathan produces wines on three continents (Europe, Australia and North America), emphasizing on small lots (high quality). French wine making with a California “twist.”

Coombsville Napa Valley
Retail 45.99 – GGWC 39.99

This wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the great Coombsville vineyard (close to Caldwell).  The wine is made in typical Maltus (French) style.   On the nose one encounters ripe plums, black cherries, vanilla and a touch of spice.  Rich, full in body and loaded with red stone fruit.  The wine is elegant and very well-balanced with soft, silky tannins rounding out this great wine.  Long lasting finish.

Retail 45.99 – GGWC 39.99

The fruit source for this wine is the base for many Napa Valley CULT wines, so at 39.99 you are in for a “steal”

Succulent black fruit jumps out of the glass on impact.   On the palate I encountered black currants, black cherries, exotic spices and a touch of toasty vanilla.  Full in body this youngster is a young bull .  Well-structured with a firm backbone, yet very elegant and smooth on the palate.  The wine finishes with long lingering  silky tannins.

As I mentioned earlier, I have just a few remaining bottles of the previous, sold-out World’s End release. Call me for availability or visit my website to place an order.

McIntyre

At McIntyre, they believe in sustainable farming, low yield and high-quality/price ratio. With Byron Kosuge (B. Kosuge winery) on board they created a real gem. Sadly only 100 cases of this unbeatable wine were produced!

McIntyre 2009 ChardonnayMcIntyre 2009 Chardonnay Block K-1 Santa Lucia Highlands
Retail 40.00 – GGWC 36.00

Winemaker Byron Kosuge (B. Kosuge winery) produced an exquisite 100 cases of Chardonnay. The wine exhibits a golden hue along with a lavish nose of walnuts, apricots and peaches.  It is full in body with a touch of crisp minerality, restrained with superb richness and elegance. This is a “fan” favorite for those that like DuMol, Kongsgaard, Diatom at a lower price!  This wine should drink well for 5-6 years.

“First Growth” from the Napa Valley dazzles the crowd

I enjoyed tasting with Steve Matthiasson the other day at 10 A.M. That really is the best time to get your palate going! Steve is a “real” guy, jovial, down-to-earth farmer/winemaker. He has been consulting for Spottswoode, Araujo and Chappellett vineyards for years (which is very noteworthy). Steve’s own vineyard has been the source for many great wineries, and I would put his own label next to many big names anytime!

Retail 76.00 – GGWC 69.99
BUY SIX or MORE $65.00 FREE SHIPPING on a FULL CASE (8 bottles will get you free shipping* as well)

The 2007 vintage is a blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and (1%) Petit Verdot. Only 280 cases were produced of this little gem. On the nose, one is greeted by freshness – intense aromas of black and red cherries, a hint of mint, dark chocolate and ripe black berries. On the palate this lush, full-bodied (yet VERY elegant) youngster is loaded with dark chocolate, ripe cane berries and finishes with lots of intensity and finesse. The silky tannins are fine-grained. This is a well-made wine that is not heavy on the palate and I would say it is his best effort yet to date.

Matthiasson 2010 White Matthiasson 2010 Proprietary White Blend
Retail 37.00 – GGWC  33.00,  BUY SIX or MORE $29.99
(Mix and Match for FREE SHIPPING offer)

The 2010 White is a blend of primarily Sauvignon Blanc (59%), Ribolla Gialla (20%), Semillon (14%) and Tocai Friulano (7%). This might be one of the most exceptional wines I have ever tasted. These (local Napa grapes) all originate in awesome regions of Italy and France (Friuli and Bordeaux). This wine is all about aromatics – The S.B. offers fresh acidity (with a hint of citrus) as well as a touch of tropical fruit. The Ribolla Gialla (remember Arbe Garbe – same vineyard FYI) brings some seashell minerality and a touch of nuttiness as well as structure. The Semillon is “Mister Viscous” as well as hints of figs and beeswax that add weight and gravity.  The Tocai adds a touch of spiciness. The wine was aged for 8 months in barrel (fermented dry).  Medium to full in body, this might be the ideal end-of-summer (I am thinking Thanksgiving and end-of-the-year holidays) wine! At 12.5% alcohol, I know we are going to make a lot of happy people here!

Robert Foley 95+ Point Wines Just Arrived

Robert Foley Vineyards

Robert Foley has been around the block a few times, so to speak. With wines like Hourglass, Robert Foley, Paloma, and so on, one can only expect the best of the best from this winery.  The 2009 vintage just arrived and I can say that this blows 2008 out of the sky! This vintage rivals his best wines to date (2007 and 2008 vintage).  The quantities are limited, so you know the drill!

Robert Foley 2009 MerlotRobert Foley 2009 Merlot, Napa Valley
Retail 60.00 – GGWC $53.99

Not a wine for wimps! This is a big, burly red! I would say it’s a Merlot on steroids, but these days one should not joke about that – so it is a Merlot for Cab lovers! The wine explodes right from the start. Its color reminds me more of Petite Sirah. On the nose one is greeted with intense aromas of black stone fruit and coffee. On the palate, this lush, big and bold wine is loaded with more black stone fruit, chocolate and coffee notes that are well-framed and offer of viscous mouth-feel. This 100% Merlot is a blend of Robert Foley’s Howell Mountain vineyard and a select (warmer) valley floor vineyard that provide harmony, balance and very well rounded mid palate. The tannins are silky, but don’t take this for granted. This is a wine that will age nicely

Robert Foley 2009 "The Griffin" Proprietary RedRobert Foley 2009 “The Griffin” Proprietary Red, Napa Valley
Retail 40.00 – GGWC 36.50

This is what Bob calls his economic challenged wine! Those who purchased the 2008 vintage will be greeted by an even more intense wine with this 2009 release.  This Proprietary Red is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 50% of what Bob calls “blockbuster ripe and round” Merlot.  A pleasure from nose to finish, it has a very aromatic nose, followed by a lush mouthfeel and a medium to full bodied palate.  Stunning blend, lush, intense and I would challenge wines like Prisoner as I know it will blow it away in an instant!

Limited allocation – 97 Point Chronicle Pinot Noir

Ted LemonA new Chapter has begun in the life of the Chronicle winery. This winery was put on the map under the great tutelage of Ace Winemaker Ted Lemon (Littorai) and has turned many heads since its inception in 2006. Having created a great following, these much sought after wines are in high demand. There is a very small allocation remaining and you dont want to miss this one!

I am proud to introduce the 2009 vintage from two designated vineyards – Cerise and Savoy. Both vineyards have an amazing amount of pedigree and many wineries have received great acclaim from these sites. In a recent blind tasting (30 tasters) both Chronicle Pinot Noirs beat out big names such as Domaine Leroy, Williams Selyem, Rochiolli, Kosta Browne, Aubert, Auteur, Foxen, Martinelli, Spell and Talley! And that is saying a lot!!

2009 Chronicle Savoy Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley
Retail 60.00 – GGWC 54.99

Pinot Noir This vineyard is one of most recognized sources for Pinot Noir in the state of California!  The vineyard is 20 years out, so good maturity here!  A blend of 3 blocks (Pommard, 777 and Martini 15) – all bring amazing components to this wine.  At only 88 cases, I can tell you that this wine will be sold in a few hours as I was only allotted 15 cases of this gem!

I would call this a Grand-Cru new world wine, as it tastes and smells like one!  The alcohol levels are Burgundian too!  On the nose one is greeted by cherry and strawberry fruit with a touch of minerality and a whiff of game.  On the palate one encounters gorgeous well-balanced fruit, medium to full bodied flavors of red stone fruit that are expansive on the mid to end palate.  The finish is intense and long – it does not want to end!  LIMITED.

2009 Chronicle Cerise Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley
Retail 60.00 – GGWC 54.99

This is another well recognized vineyard source. Those who bought the previous Chronicle Cerise bottlings do not need an intro – this wine rocks!  This is a sexy wine.  The wine’s aromas jump out of the glass, the body is stunning, the legs are long – you see where I am going… no I am not.  Stay focused, the wine is gorgeous, well-crafted, a real winner!  The nose offers hints of dark cherries and plum.  On the palate this wine offers seductive (here we go again) flavors of black cherries and strawberries that are intertwined with a touch of minerality.  This youngster is elegant and intense without being overbearing.  The finish is long , complex and equally stunning as the rest of its  package.  Only 132 cases produced!

Stunning Oakville Cabernet

This is one of the gems out of Frank’s drawer!  Only 100 cases were produced of this Cabernet, which was sourced from well-known Chef Narsai David’s vineyard in Oakville.  100% Cabernet Sauvignon, 110% Quality, 120% Value!

J. Moss 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville J. Moss 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville Napa Valley
This wine has an amazing hue, which is densely concentrated.  On the nose one is greeted by black currant, chocolate and a whiff of anise.  On the the palate, this full-bodied rock star does not miss a beat either.  Layers of sweet black berry and some more chocolate rise up with a hint of truffle and minerality at the back of your mouth.  The finish is long and dramatic with silky tannins singing a final tune.

This Howell Mountain Cabernet ROCKS!

Spence Wines

I am very excited to work with Spence again, this little winery has become a real commodity and many among you have been asking for the next release.  It is here!  Finally.  Another one of the “great” 2007 vintage wines!  As you know, Spence is very small in quantity, but great in quality.  This Mountain (thus Rock and the wine itself Rocks) winery will sell out by month’s end!

Spence 2007 Cabernet SauvignonSpence 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Howell Mountain “Estate”
Retail 75.00 – GGWC 69.99 – (FREE SHIPPING on SIX or MORE)

Many think that Howell Mountain is synonymous with Dunn’s big, tannic wines – wrong!  Our friends at Spence have again produced another gem of a (elegant) wine.  The 2007 vintage was sourced from their “tiny” 3 acre vineyard on Howell Mountain.

It is 100% Howell Mountain, but not a 100% tannic monster!  The aromatics and flavors are delicious at impact!  Black stone fruit with a hint on minerality jumps out of the glass.  At impact one is greeted by (almost) sweet black currant fruit which are powerful, yet extremely elegant and refined.  Winemaker Marco DiGiulio at his best!  Very well-structured and balanced, with the right touch of acid meeting the right balance fruit at its equinox.  This is a stunning vineyard, a stunning wine and with a production of 200 cases it will be gone in no time!

Screaming Eagle Winemaker does it again at a “bargain” price!

Leviathan Wines

Andy EricksonAndy Erickson does not need an intro.  His resume is well-known, but for those who are not familiar he is and has been responsible for Screaming Eagle, Favia, Dalla Valle, Ovid, Arietta, Dancing Hares, Mad Hatter,  Staglin, and others.  The fruit for the 2009 Leviathan is sourced from the Favia family vineyards (Andy’s wife Annie’s family).  I can honestly say that 2009 will “rock-your-world!”  As always, jump on the train now as it will leave the station soon!

Flavors of cherries and blackberry jam rush over the palate, with smooth, silky tannins and intense fruit lingering on a lengthy finish.  A sizable wine, the newest incarnation of Leviathan is a hedonistic delight now, and should provide added excitement in years to come – but why wait?

A 94 Point Zinful Wine!

Gamba Vineyards and Winery

Gamba Vineyards is a small, family owned vineyard and winery in Sonoma County. The  110 year old 27 acre Gamba Estate Vineyard parcel rests on the Eastern edge of the beautiful Russian River Valley on gently rolling bench land above the valley floor. Planted to Zinfandel in 1900, the Gamba Estate Vineyard consists primarily of Old Vine Zinfandel, as well as small separate blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon. With ideal Southern exposure, the vineyard is bathed in sunlight during the growing season. On average the yield is small, in part due to nature, but also by design-approximately one half ton, and occasionally up to one ton per acre is harvested, depending on the vigor of vineyard block and severity of pruning.

Gamba 2009 "Old Vine" ZinfandelGamba 2009 Zinfandel “Old Vine” Moratto Vineyard, Russian River Valley

Carrying on the tradition of this legendary old vine vineyard, the 2009 vintage has a tremendously dense texture complemented by big fruit and great power. Stunningly rich and concentrated, the 2009 Gamba Old Vine Moratto Vineyard Russian River Valley Zinfandel has incredibly deep, dark fruit and luscious tannins.

This old-vine Zinfandel provides captivating aromas of fresh blackberry, white pepper and anise on the nose. Characterized by its particularly dark inky opaque color, this wine is complemented by flavors reminiscent of ripe plum, blackberry and bittersweet chocolate – characteristics achieved by the co-fermentation of Old Vine Zinfandel and Old Vine Petite Sirah grapes. This wine is very round and full with hints of complex flavors, showcasing espresso, and silky, spicy dark chocolate notes on the finish. Enjoy its long, elegant, finish that engages the senses and fills the palate.

Redmon. Another 97 point in “the Next Round!”

Redmon WinesWe have created a great following with the Redmon Estate Cabernet for years now. Unfortunately, the estate is only 4 acres and 250 cases is about as much as the Redmons can produce – unless they start cutting corners.  Quality before Quantity is both Redmon and Golden Gate Wine Cellars’ motto.  That said year in year out, the demand for Redmon far outpaces its supply.  So a few years ago, the Redmons approached seasoned grower Pat Garvey and the rest is history as they say.  This Cabernet based blend is a little less expensive compared to the Estate bottling, but it still screams Redmon quality!

A new chapter in the Redmon book was created.  From Pat Garvey’s ranch on the western hillside slope of Rutherford, the Redmons are sourcing this “new” wine.  A blend of 80% Cabernet, 10% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc was crafted into a gorgeous, approachable wine.   This Cabernet (blend) offers a very welcoming aroma of anise, chocolate and dark berry stone fruit.  On the palate one is welcomed by dark chocolate, cassis, dark berries and a touch of vanilla.  The wine is medium to full in body, lush in texture, well-balanced with nice extraction and the right ratio of fruit to acid.  Its silky smooth tannins linger on for a good thirty seconds.  A mere 200 cases of this puppy were produced!

This Chardonnay was sourced from an amazing vineyards located at the gateway to the Napa Valley. It is nestled at the top of a small knoll in the center of the Carneros Appellation. Bordered by some of the world’s finest Chardonnay and Pinot Noir producers, the fruit from this unique vineyard enjoys a pedigree second to none. Only 200 cases of this little gem were produced.  The aromatics jumped out of the bottle while pouring my first glass.  Hints of melon, white peaches and green apple are prevalent on both the nose and palate, along with balanced notes of lychee nuttiness.  A touch of almond and vanilla dances across the mid-palate (courtesy of the great French oak barrels).  Medium to full in body, this wine is lush and finishes long with refined acidity.  Its silky mouth-feel   expresses the natural goodness captured from the warm days and cool nights that one comes to expect from the Carneros region in the Napa Valley.

An Amazing Pedigree! Tor 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon

Tor Kenward Family Vineyards

I just tasted with Tor Kenward from Tor winery.  His latest release, the 2009 Napa Cabernet is a cuvee (blend) of To-Kalon, Cimarossa and Mast vineyards!  This bottling contains an  amazing pedigree and the wine lives up to it’s expectations!

On the nose you get the cool side of cabernet with earth/blackberry/cloves and a touch of mint. On the palate this is medium/full weight with just silky smooth tannins. This wine shows its base in Yountville with the black side of fruit as well as slightly more Bordeaux like profile. The addition of some famous Oakville fruit gives it some up front sweetness and depth. The addition of the Cimarossa Cabernet lends some cool climate spice and slightly firm tannins on the finish.  With all three vineyard sources from which Tor pulled to blend this wine, you may never taste a better example of a true Napa Valley Cabernet than this with its Yountville/Oakville/Howell Mountain sources.

The details on temperature controlled shipping

Beginning July 20  we will be offering temperature controlled shipping via UPS!  A blessing for those who want to have their wines arrive in good condition during the hot summer months.

This service is ground via temperature controlled/refrigerated containers – (UPS rail). I have monitored the shipments for some weeks during UPS’ trial runs and the wine arrives in very good condition!

There will be a nominal, flat surcharge of $8 to $12 on each shipment.  We will still offer the FREE ground shipping for orders of $500.00 or more, but if you request refrigerated shipping, there will be a surcharge for this additional service.

Hawaii and Alaska shipments can only be shipped 1 or 2 day AIR as no other service is available. Again, we still store wines at no charge and will gladly ship AIR if you desire to do so. In either case, we will deduct the cost of FREE ground shipping from the air freight  charge for orders exceeding $500.00.

UPS has divided the US into four regions, alternating this shipping program between them once a week. For example, the week of July 20 it will cover the NY region which includes NH, etc.  The other regions are Jacksonville (FL) July 27, Chicago (IL) on August 3 and Dallas (TX) on August 10 rotating back to NY, FL, IL and TX.

Unfortunately, some states are not a part of UPS’ temperature shipping program. Most states are, but depending on where you live, it is possible that you might not be able to benefit from this program. – Contact your congressional representative and voice your opinion regarding bill HR1161 – what Congress calls the CARE Act of 2011, (Community Alcohol Regulatory Effectiveness Act) more an “act” that prevents you the consumer to buy the wines you like from people like us to “protect” the local wholesaler – who does NOT stock these hard-to-find wines to begin with… sorry I got carried away.

This can all be a little confusing, so as always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me!

Your humbled Wine Servant,
Frank Melis

Secret Service Wine!

Von Holt Wines

Chris Von Holt is the quintessential, second career, artisan wine proprietor. He was raised in San Francisco, CA, just a few miles from California’s premier wine growing valleys. As the saying goes, he knows the area.  His first career was service to the Executive Branch of government as a United States Secret Service Agent, where he served his country for over twenty years. He protected 4 presidents, 4 vice-presidents, and their immediate families, as well as numerous foreign heads of state, and senior members of government. While assigned to Protective Details, he traveled to 40 foreign countries, having to quickly discern the nature and differences of people, places and cultures; while witnessing the culinary traditions and offerings of numerous foreign heads of state.  His travels exposed him to the best of the best (i.e. wine) and living in the Bay Area he knew that he was destined to have a second career in the wine industry.  With Ed Kurtzman (winemaker at ROAR, FREEMAN, AUGUST WEST and SANDLER on his side you can only expect that the best possible wine is being made!

I don’t like to quote publications, but Wine Spectator just wrote on July 6 2011 that 2009 is THE best vintage for Pinot Noir in decades and produced some of the most amazing wines ever.  Here is one example.  I would describe The Van Holt 2009 Suacci Pinot Noir as a cross section between a great Premier Cru Red Burgundy and a high-end California Pinot Noir.  The wine offers intense aromas and flavors of pomegranate and red fruits with a (oh so) slight earthy undertone. The 2009 growing season was one of the coolest in over two decades and the result was stunning wine!  This is a delightful wine that is rich, intense yet very elegant with bright red cherry, raspberry fruit that is well-balanced with the right touch of acidity.  The wine finishes long with a touch of toasty vanilla and silky tannins. While nuanced and lovely now, this is also one for the cellar.  Only 225 cases produced.

Hot weather shipping news!

I am working with UPS on shipping TEMPERATURE CONTROLLED (great for summer and winter). By later this week, or early next week we should have more detailed information. Happy Independence Day from Golden Gate Wine Cellars

The Statue of Liberty Unveiling - Oct 28, 1886Dear Friends of Golden Gate Wine Cellars,

Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, barbecues, family reunions, and often time for families to reflect. We at Golden Gate Wine Cellars want to reflect on the past six years and say thank you for all your support.  Without you we would not have been able to succeed.  Being an independent business owner is a risk and requires hard work and many hours.  I wake up happy every morning (I do have a great wife and two awesome daughters), but I love coming to work and talking to all of my customers and sharing my passion. Only in America is this possible – I made a hobby into a great profession. Thank you to all of you!

Have a great Holiday weekend.  Have fun wherever you are!  Drink lots of good wine (remember my motto – Always Drink Good Wine!), but most of all BE SAFE!

A very humbled,

Frank Melis

Alondra 2007 Cabernet, Yountville Napa Valley
Retail 40.00 – GGWC 37.50
SPECIAL 32.50

Alondra 2007 CabernetThis is a secretive wine! We are not allowed to tell you where the fruit comes from, but I can tell you that it has to do with a successful management career in the NFL and some Super Bowl wins! I can tell you that the source is an amazing 10 acre site in the Yountville district of Napa Valley. The Alondra winemakers crafted an amazing, well-priced wine from this stunning vineyard source! On the nose one is greeted by gobs of black currant, cassis and cocoa powder aromas. On the palate this lush, densely concentrated wine classic Napa Valley black stone fruit with a touch of chocolate and a touch of spice. The palate is expressive and flavorful, with the rich fruit profile beautifully balanced by gravelly earth and refined, but silky tannins. With a production of 200 cases, I can tell you that this one will not last long!

Kosta Browne winemaker ROCKS! 96 Point rated vineyard!

Michael BrowneI only need to say Kosta Browne – now I have your attention. Yes, the wines from Jemrose are made by ace winemaker Michael Browne (From Kosta Browne), and in some instances a little DuMol (some assistance from Andy Smith winemaker at DuMol) was incorporated.  Shane Finley (assistant winemaker at Kosta Browne) and Greg Bjornstad (formerly Flowers and now Bjornstad winery) finish out the wine and vineyard team – not bad company at all!

This 100% estate grown property in the beautiful Bennett Valley in the hills of Sonoma has been growing grapes for years and selling them to some of the most sought after wineries. They produce very limited quantities themselves and will turn lots of heads as the quality is high! Some great reviews on these wines just came out as well! Stephen Tanzer is not as generous as Parker and Spectator, so don’t be surprised to see this wines reviewed at much higher scores in either publication shortly!

Winemaker Michael Brown (Kosta Browne) has crafted yet another amazing wine! The 2008 Jemrose Gloria’s Gem is of the signature wine and is composed from barrels from the much sought after Cardiac Hill Estate Syrah (Cardiac Hill is the source for 96 point rated Carlisle and 95 Point rated Keplinger) and Two Sisters Merlot vineyard. Gloria is of course the “lady” of the house! This unique blend is intended to provide the best of what the Jemrose Vineyard and Bennett Valley AVA can offer. The wine has been aged for 20 months in French oak. The wine delivers abundant aromas of cassis, currents, plum, kirsch, dark berries and espresso. A velvety and plush texture displaying rich flavors of berry, cocoa, and spice. Full flavored and fleshy but not heavy in the least bit. The finish is long, elegant and quite enduring. Seductive and sleek.

The nose explodes from the glass with a complex mixture of honeysuckle, pineapple, orange blossom, jasmine, lemon curd and white peach. A creamy texture in the mouth provides flavors of tropical fruits, mandarin oranges and crème brulee. A crisp acidity complements the rich extended flavors and with a touch of minerality.

Fragrant aromas of dark berries, smoked meat, white pepper, violets, with a hint of graphite. The texture is elegant and silky, not heavy, and coats the palate with rich flavors of dark berries, dried cherries, graphite and grilled meats. The finish is focused, persistent and offers great balance and purity of fruit. FYI Cardiac Hill (the Jemrose Estate) is the source for 96 point rated Carlisle Cardiac Hill Syrah and the 95 Point Rated Keplinger Syrah – so an amazing pedigree!
