Rousseau Chardonnay = Quality & Value from Napa + Free Shipping!

y Rousseau

In Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers, D’Artagnan fell for the beautiful and mysterious Milady. This French style inspired Chardonnay is Yannick Rousseau’s Lady – “Milady” – Susanna’s favorite aphrodisiac! It comes from the highly acclaimed, 1800 foot elevation Godspeed Vineyards.

Gorgeous aromatics jump out of the glass of this amazing Chardonnay – aromas of peach, vanilla and a whiff of minerality are intertwined in this stellar Chardonnay, which I fondly call “Burgundy-West”.  This medium to full bodied wine was made “au-naturel” by using native yeast and no malolactic fermentation.  This wine offers a very distinct aroma and flavor (high-stressed vines at 1800 feet elevation will do that).  “Milady” is complex, well-balanced with an amazing textural richness.  From start to finish you’ll enjoy this youngster.  I would pair this wine with Dungeness Crab or a Rosemary Chicken dish fresh from the grill.  Only 190 cases produced, so it will go fast!

94 Point Syrah ROCKS!

Krutz Family Cellars

Krutz FamilyFounded by an army of one, Patrick Krutz, Krutz Family Cellars has just recently grown into its “full” business name. The 2003-’06 vintages were crafted entirely by Patrick. Youngest brother Cole came on the scene in 2007 and has been assisting in the cellar ever since. Also joining the operation (and the family) in 2008 was Rebecca Krutz. She and Patrick met in Napa Valley in the summer of 2007 and were married the next year. Together, they have two sons, Patrick II and Tripp Morris, along with a daughter, Ellie. When the business was founded, the word “Family” was included due to Patrick’s close family ties, but now it encompasses an even bigger and broader meaning. After all, anyone that enjoys a bottle of Krutz Family Cellars is a part of our extended family. I have been happily impressed by Patrick’s winemaking skills over the years, and in my book this wine is yet another accolade!

Stunning flavors of blackberry and blueberry liqueurs, and crème de cassis mix with traditional Syrah notes of smoked bacon, licorice, and pepper. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with a ripe and voluptuous profile. Some oak is hiding under that Californian ripeness of the fruit, while the complexity is very northern Rhône.

94 Points, Editors’ Choice, Top 100 Wines of 2012:

“A dramatic wine, rich and full bodied, this has flavors that change with every taste. The structure is complex in tannins and acid, framing kaleidoscopic notes of blackberry, black currant, spicy smoked bacon, violet, white pepper and sandalwood. Drink this outstanding Syrah over the next six years.”

16 X 20 Wines

For those who purchased previous vintages of 16×20 I don’t need to make any more introduction. For the rest of you, be prepared to be delighted. This 400 case production (97% Cabernet and 3% Petit Verdot) was sourced from four prime vineyards in Napa (Yountville, Atlas Peak, Oak Knoll and Soda Canyon).  Paul Hobbs does not need any introduction either, as his name is synonymous with “Mr. Wine.”

This wine features a deep reddish purple color that is uniform to the rim. Gorgeous aroma of  cedar, tobacco and black stone fruits.  The palate is lush and its mouth-feel is smooth and rich, leading to exotic flavors of black cherries, black plums, black fig and cinnamon.  Well-balanced from start to finish, this youngster shows well now, and will improve even more with a little time in the cellar.  The finish is long with silky tannins.

The Chardonnay from the Ferrington Vineyard, was first planted in the late 1960s. It has a gentle south-facing slope, and has decomposed sandstone and clay soils with three to four feet of topsoil. The vineyard reminds me a lot of a Grand Cru vineyard in Burgundy.  William Selyem, Copain and Flowers source from this vineyard as well.

Pale yellow/gold color. Nose of crisp green apple and white flowers with hints of vanilla crème. Mouth-feel is mid-weight and clean. Flavors of pear, quince, nutmeg and salinity provide both New and Old world chardonnay drinkers with something to celebrate in this wine. Only 275 cases produced!

This source for stunning Pinot Noir (Angel Camp) is meticulously farmed by Paul Ardzrooni, one of Mendocino’s most respected viticulturists who also manages Savoy, Monument Tree, and Ferrington.  This vineyard is planted with five different clones: Pommard, Swan, 115, 667, and 2A which make for an ideal combination to produce the best possible Pinot Noir, and they sure did!

Deep translucent ruby color. Nose is incredibly fragrant and earthy, with red fruits, mushrooms and fresh herbs. Mouthfeel is smooth, rich and vibrant. Enticing flavors of morello cherries, orange blossom, sage, fresh tea lead to a long, mineraly finish. A tremendous expression of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir.

Y Rosseau Wines

The renaissance of Colombard!

Colombard is a variety originally from the South-West of France where it has been grown for hundreds of years. Yannick Rousseau  made his first Colombard in 1996 in the heart of Gascony. The grapes for Y Rousseau Old Vines Colombard come from the last Colombard vines planted in the Russian River Valley. Yannick chose to make this wine because of its unique character and to bring a slice of Gascony to American wine lovers.

The old vines of this vineyard, nestled in the Russian River Valley, seem to gain in finesse year after year. The 2011 combines nice citrus notes with hints of minerality. The palate displays layers of green apple and grapefruit. This is a bone dry wine, with an alcohol content of only 12.8%!  The wine is balance with the right amount of acidity and texture, the perfect combo to whet your appetite! Drink it well-chilled on its own, or pair it with delicious spicy or seafood dishes, like a lovely Crab Salad on Butter leaf with Avocado!

Hidden Gemstone

Forlorn Hope

Petit Verdot is a varietal one does not see bottled by itself very often, as it is and has been a blending grape (like Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec).  It is by far the least visible single Bordeaux varietal.  I would say because of its boldness that few wineries  want to bottle it.  I am guilty as charged, as I haven’t stocked any 100% Petit Verdot bottlings before either, so this is first for both of us.

Regarding this offering’s origins, winemaker Matthew Rorick says:

Cosmopolitan isn’t necessarily superior. Sometimes being farther from the arbiters of taste lends not only better perspective but encourages development of richer character and a more interesting personality. Consider the cohort of Gascon barons that Cyrano ran with: sneered at by their city-born peers for their country origins, they took pride in that which marked them as different. Outnumbered, they fought to the last, brazenly singing that their foes might know who laid down their lives for country and King:

“Braggers of brags, layers of bets

They are the Gascony Cadets

They scorn the scented handkerchief,

They dance no jigs or minuets.

They cook their enemies on brochettes,

Hot blood is their aperitif!”

The Gascony Cadets, made from 100% Petit Verdot, comports itself as you would expect of its noble namesake. It’s bucolic petit royalty from soup to nuts. Making a grand entrance with a flourish of fruit-forward finery, it proceeds to make claims of incredible braggadocio regarding its breadth of palate – and delivers on them. With tannins as firm as a Gascon’s code of honor and a subtle “Baronal” elegance swimming just below the surface, the finish holds a flash of steel and a hint of the Cadet’s aperitif.

This is a full bodied wine with amazing flavors.  The wine has an opaque hue, very intense perfumed aroma of exotic berries, a touch of anise and vanilla.  The palate is loaded, dense and lush but very well-structured.  Well-balanced fruit to acid ratio and long, but silky tannins.  This is big, bold wine that is drinking well now (decant and give it about 90 minutes), but could age gracefully in your cellar for another 10 – 12 years.

Best Napa Cabernet UNDER $33

Karen Culler has been crafting the wines at Wolf for 15 years now and her own label Culler and Casaeda have received some nice press over the years as well. The 2010 Casaeda Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced  from two Napa the Alexander Vineyard (NO relation to Silver Oak) near Soda Canyon has soils that are light sandy loam with excellent drainage, producing small berries with plenty of extract and a deep ruby color.  The Tangles vineyard is planted on a southeast facing incline on well drained loam soils. The Tangles and Alexander owners are meticulous in caring for their vineyards.  The Alexanders  farm sustainably while the Tangles vineyard is certified organic, as well. Both vineyards are in the Oak Knoll appellation in Napa Valley.

The goal of Casaeda Cabernet is to make a wine that says “Napa Cabernet” with deep fruit flavors and balanced tannins… a wine that can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring but still has the depth of an excellent Napa Cab.

The 2010 Casaeda Cabernet has rich blackberry and red stone fruit flavors with soft tannins and a plush, velvety mid palate. The 2010 vintage produced a wine with softer tannins than usual for Napa Valley and because of this, one is approachable now, but could still age nicely for a good 6 – 8 years.  413 cases produced.

“Down Under” Cabernet turns heads!

We have a US exclusive for the 2008 O’Dwyer Cabernet! Over the holidays we conducted an “International Tasting” and I was excited to see that O’Dwyer did very well in the challenge.  All wines were from the 2008 vintage. We had 18 tasters (and at least 2 bottles of each wine).  All wines were tasted blind! Our line-up included:

California:

  • Hayfork  (94+ Parker) – ($65)
  • Buccella (95 Parker) – ($145)
  • Gallica (94+ Parker) – ($135)
  • Morlet “Coeur de Vallee” (98 Parker) – ($200)

France:

  • Angelus (93 Parker) – ($200)
  • Clinet (94+ Parker) – ($95)

Italy:

  • Gaja “Darmagi” (94 Parker) – ($185)
  • Castellare Coniale (94 Parker) – ($75)

Washington:

  • Fidelitas “Champoux” (95 Parker) – ($80)

Australia:

  • Penfolds Cellar Reserve (94 Parker)
  • Cape Mentelle (92 Parker) – ($85)
  • Moss Wood (95+ Parker) – ($85)
  • O’Dwyer Estate (95 GWC)

O’Dwyer came in second, only after Morlet, which is not a shame as it beat out all the other wineries! And this says a lot considering O’Dwyer is 1/3 the price of Morlet! Suprisingly Clinet, Moss Wood, and Gallica did not show well at our tasting.

The wine has an amazing hue of opaque/purple colors with an equally gorgeous bouquet of chocolate, black currant, licorice jumping out of the glass. This full-bodied wine is lush, opulent and layered with more back stone fruit rushing over its intense well-balanced palate.  Although full in body, this wine is well-crafted, it is drinking amazingly well and shows great aging potential.  The tannins are there, but not aggressive.  This wine boils over with personality and should age nicely for 10+ years.  Unfortunately only 50 cases will be available in the US (which is 1/2 of the previous two vintages), so I suggest that you jump on this NOW!

Seabiscuit lives and wins again!

SeabiscuitThe story of Seabiscuit lives on in the heart of America. Everyone loves the tale of this stocky, knobby-kneed racehorse who triumphed over adversity to become one of the greatest champions of the 20th century. During the 1930s, as America struggled to overcome the Great Depression, the determined spirit of this unlikely victor reflected the mood of the nation. After setting a track record at Santa Anita in 1940, the spectacular racing career of this legendary Thoroughbred came to an end. Seabiscuit was retired to a ranch in Mendocino County’s Redwood Valley, where his memory inspires great winemaking endeavors.  Seabiscuit is buried at the property – no, it is not another Graceland, but you can visit if you like.

This is an exceptional red wine blend of four classic varieties.  This wine’s name is SUPERFECTA, a betting term used to predict the first four finishers in correct sequence within a race.  This is a proprietary super-quality red wine comprised primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with nuances gained with the addition of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.  These four varieties develop mouth-filling fruit flavors, elegance and finesse. The wine has deep purple color, concentrated ripe fruit aromas and flavors, with medium-to-robust body.  It has soft tannins and is ideal for drinking now, yet will benefit from further bottle aging for many years.

Happy New Year from all of us!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! The new year is just around the corner. We survived the end of the world this past month so the next year should be a piece of cake! Have you got your resolutions written up and ready to go?

Personally, I am very much looking forward to the upcoming year. Not only for seeing my own resolutions come to fulfillment but for all of the new releases that are on their way. We are coming off of a few challenging growing seasons, and that usually means a crop of elegant and complex wines. Napa’s greatest winemakers have been working overtime and I cannot wait to sample the results.

So, here’s to you and your wishes for the new year, and to those we have in common. May you all have a very Happy New Year!

Chanin Top 100 Chardonnay, great value

Chanin Wines

This wine has tremendous focus and energy. There is a great paprika and spice component on the nose as well as  green apple skin and ripe apricot. The palate is mineral, and finishes with great viscous concentration and length. In typical form of Los Alamos Vineyard, which is planted on an ancient sand dune, the palate has a unique saline quality that waters the mouth and lasts for minutes.

Based on his results from a vineyard that has defined California for nearly four decades, he’s making a good point. A profound, benchmark expression of Bien Nacido, with ripe aromas of pineapple and Buddha’s hand, plus that toasted-oat richness of Chardonnay on its lees, matched by intense mineral power.

Alexana Revana!

Alexana Revana

For those familiar with the great Cabernet crafted from their Napa vineyard, this Pinot Noir does not need any intro.  The wines are made by Oregon’s top winemaker Lynn Penner-Ash, who has garnered plenty of fame and accolades in her career. Lynn started her career at Stag’s Leap in the Napa Valley before settling in Oregon in 1988 as the winemaker for Rex Hill. In 2002 she started her own winery, Penner-Ash Wine Cellars.  In 2005 Dr. Revana purchased the “Revana” Vineyard in the Dundee Hills and in 2006 they crafted the first Alexana.

The 2010 Revana Vineyard Pinot Noir is an excellent representation of both the vintage and the Revana Vineyard site.  The 2010 vintage produced an intense, complex and balanced wine.  Bright, forward aromas of black cherry, dried herbal and floral notes are lifted by molasses and anise blossom.  Massive black cherry flavors are decadent and integrate well with spice, cola and cocoa tones.  The texture is lush and rich, finishing with round soft tannins that provide perfect structure for cellaring.

Wine Spectator Insider gives this wine 94 Points:

“Tangy, focused and juicy, with blackberry, currant and subtle spice flavors, finishing with an open feel to the expressive finish. Shows impressive purity, clarity and length. Drink now through 2020. —H.S.”

Best Bistro Wine of the year

Bacio Divino Cellars

Claus Janzen was born in Germany, but moved to Canada as a child. Later, he moved back to Europe, working at a number of high-end hotels. It was during that time his interest in wine began to really grow. He returned to Canada to get a business degree and during the beginning of a professional real estate career, he became more involved in the world of food and wine. His passion even earned him the award of Best Wine Taster of Canada! After more visits to Europe’s wine country he eventually was introduced to Chuck Wagner of Caymus. Long story short, in 1988, he started a wine career from scratch with the help of the Wagner family and eventually started Bacio Divino in 1993 and stayed at Caymus for the next decade as a marketing manager.  Bacio Divino owns a 10 acre vineyard in Napa, and also sources from some very reputable vineyards such as To-Kalon!

Pazzo is,a very unpretentious and thoroughly enjoyable, fun wine ready to be consumed over the holidays.  Although Pazzo ages quite well,  I encourage early consumption so you’ll enjoy the fresh strawberry component that is more evident when at an early bottle age. The Sangiovese fruit is redolent of sweet berry fruit, and the underlying acid component begs for simpe, flavorful food – tomatoes, garlic, herbs and spices.  It is no coincidence that Robert Parker calls Pazzo the “Best Bistro styled” wine in the country!

The color is a gorgeous dark puple hue.  On the nose this youngster shjows of internee aromatics of black currant and chocolate.  This 2009 vintage’s body is amazingly intense, yet gorgeously proportioned and well-balanced.   In line with its aromatics this wine is loaded with black currants, plums and rich chocolate flavors.   Full in body, with nice extraction of flavors, this wine shows balanced acidity and fruit ratios and lingers on into a long lasting finish.  Unfortunately only 192 cases of this wine were produced, and with the success of 2007 and 2008 I foresee this one to be sold out in no time at all.
