Only 12 Days until Christmas….

Dear Friends,

We are nearing crunch time, don’t wait too long to get your holiday wine gifts ordered.

Winter has hit everyone with a vengeance. Even the SF Bay Area is freezing cold.

Napa hit low 20’s over the weekend and San Francisco was a balmy 36.
On that note, shipping GROUND service is ill-advised at this time.

Only 1 and 2 DAY service would make sense, 3 DAY service to some areas might work.
Give me a call if you have any questions and I can make sure that you are taken care of.

If you are not trying to get you wine before the holiday, be sure to ask me about our free storage options.
I want to make sure that your wine does not freeze!

Happy Holidays,

Frank

“THE” Cabernet find of the year – FREE SHIPPING

The story starts five million years ago when a small sandpiper wandered along the shore, seeing a world we will never know. The tiny tracks the sandpiper left behind were covered with sediment and fossilized by the geological forces that created what is now the Porter Family Vineyards in the Coombsville region of Napa Valley.

From their hillside vineyards and underground winery, the Porter Family makes small amounts of beautifully hand-crafted wines—each one carrying the unique signature of this place.   The Porters retain the fossilized footprints of the sandpiper found on their property as a reminder of the incredible history of their winegrowing site.

Crafted by Ken Bernards the 2009 Cabernet  offers up an amazing dark hue and intense, extracted aroma of cassis, plum, black stone fruits.  On the palate this full-bodied, intensely concentrated wine offers up a potpourri of flavors – black currant, espresso, plum, a whiff of nutmeg and toasty vanilla.  The wine is big and round, yet extremely well-balanced with the right amounts of acidity intertwined with the gorgeous fruit.  The structure is bold, so I suggest decanting the wine a good 1-2 hours before serving.  Fine, grained tannins show the age ability of this wine.  Only 325 cases produced.

Titus Best Cabernet Franc in the Napa Valley!

Cabernet Franc might not be the varietal that everyone “shops” for, but I say that those who don’t are wrong!  Cabernet Franc (as Merlot) might be a “blending” varietal, but I am a firm believer that Cabernet Franc makes great wine on its own (as it does in Bordeaux – look at Cheval Blanc!)  That said, I tasted 1000+ wines this year, some great others so-so and those who read my emails and blog will know that we take it very serious!  Out of the 100 Cabernet Francs tasted we had to make the hard decision and elected Titus 2011 Cabernet Franc of the year!

Titus 2011 Cabernet Franc

The 2011 Titus Cabernet Franc has a shimmering ruby appearance. The complex nose offers aromas of strawberry, rooibos red tea, black currant jam, elderberry, fresh sliced vanilla bean, chocolate and slight note of spice. The wine is medium-full in body with mouthwatering flavors of pomegranate, blueberry, dark fig, and black tea leaves with just the right touch of acidity. The finish is everlasting with sweet oak spice and coffee.

Crowd pleasing under 40.00 Napa Cab Blend

Petit Batard is the illegitimate offspring of the Xtant Cabernet.  A small production winery in the Napa Valley.  Jeff Gaffner (Hestan, Saxon Brown) has been making the wines for some years now and the “Dollar Cost Average” formula is always applied here.  I would call this a “Great wine for your Buck!”  The owners are third generation winery owners and winemakers so expertise is key here.

On the nose you are greeted by gorgeous aromas of black currant, anise and chocolate.  This medium to full bodied Proprietary Red blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 1% Malbec taste a lot more expensive than its price tag!  The wine is rich body and juicy in flavor, with the right balance of fruit and acid on the mid-palate.  The wine is supple and silky and easy to drink now with a good 10 years of cellar potential left.

Pisoni’s incredible UNDER $40.00 PINOT

Fort Ross is the western most vineyard in Californias’ Sonoma Coast appellation.  This all-estate grown property has been on fire ever since Ace Winemaker Jeff Pisoni took over the winemaking reins in 2008.  The vines are now 15+ years old, so the maturity is paying of dividend for this great property.

The 2009 Fort Ross “FRV” Pinot Noir is a combination of Dijon Clones 115 & 777 with Pommard, Swan & Calera, so a nice mix of esteemed clonal selections.  The wine offers a near opaque image.  It is concentrated (Pommard clone does this) with generous aromas of black currants and boysenberry and a whiff of barnyard on the nose. The wine is rich and full in body with opulent layers of black stone fruit that are keenly balanced by savory notes and a touch of minerality and acidity that continue to evolve through the long lingering finish. This gorgeous wine might be one of the best under $40.00 Pinot Noirs I tasted this year.

Hyde Vineyard is synonymous with some of the most sought after fruit in California.  Every great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer begs them for it year after year.  If this vineyard would be in France it would carry the tag “Premiere Cru” for sure!  I am very excited to offer the Premiere Release of their Chardonnay, while this is the third Pinot Noir release.

Stunning Cab Franc from Napa under $40.00

John Skupny gained tons of experience at wineries around the world before landing the National Sales Manager position at Francis Ford Copolla’s Rubicon winery.  It was during that time his love for Cabernet Franc came more to the forefront and eventually came to fruition when he located an amazing vineyard on ideal rocky soils on a beautiful hillside slope in the southeastern corner of Napa Valley. The new world climate combined with this old world Loire Clone “214” provides the basis for a unique and immensely gratifying presentation of the Cabernet Franc grape. Lang & Reed ‘Two-Fourteen’ expresses the highest achievement in creating a wine made exclusively from Cabernet Franc that represents the only known bottling of this unique clone in California to date.

It displays a saturated deep red color with violet highlights that lead into aromas of cherry, rose petal, sandalwood and fresh herbs. The first of two cool vintages in a row the 2011 shows a heady aroma of red currant, anise and red cherry. The flavors are full and rich with a delicate balance of fruit & tannin, allowing for a rich balanced wine to enjoy right now yet with enough structure to gain complexity with proper cellar ageing.

The REAL Halloween Wine!

Rancho Carne Humana was a 17,962-acre Mexican land grant in present day Napa County, California given in 1841 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Edward Turner Bale. The name means “human flesh” in Spanish! The original landowner was afraid that the people would squat on his land, so he created tales of the cannibals living there – thus the “Carne Humana” (Human Flesh) story.  The story is “cute” but the wine is very serious.  This second release is not just a fly-by-night wine, it is the real McCoy!

A stunning blend of 40% Petite Verdot, 30% Petite Sirah, 10% Zinfandel, 10% Syrah, 5% Cab Sauvingon and 5% Charbono. This is only the second release, and I can say this might be one of the best “Outside-the-box” blends I have tasted this year! This is a wine that will hands down beat wines like Prisoner, especially in the $ department!  The wine is loaded from nose to finish with bold flavors. Opaque purplish-black color.  Gorgeous fragrant nose of lush red fruit and hints of subtle spiciness jump out of the glass.  On the palate this medium to full bodied “monster” offers up a mixture of rich, smooth, black stone fruit, anise, chocolate, espresso and a touch of nutty spiciness that linger into a long, pleasant silky finish.

“THE” Chardonnay & Pinot Noir Bargains of the Month

WPA (Wine Projects Administration), a play on the old work projects administration that was part of the new deal in the 1930’s, is the latest venture of one of California’s most acclaimed winemakers.  His wines have garnered big press and accolades with every release.  His young(er) vines show very well, but he is very picky and decided to create an additional label “WPA” to find a good house for this amazing fruit.  He did ask to remain “nameless” as the sources used for WPA are top-notch and he did not want offend the vineyard owners.

From the tallest heights of Mt. Veeder, well above the Napa Valley floor, the winemaker handcrafts his story one chapter at a time into a collected work of vintages: a traditional tale told from a new perspective, a moveable feast intended to endure. This classic Bordeaux “style” blend exemplifies its Napa Valley mountain home. All five traditional Bordeaux grapes are used with Cabernet Sauvignon being the majority and dominate varietal. His goal is to create a soft and very rich old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon blend but with ultra-rich Napa Valley fruit flavor. This wine will age for 10-15 years easily.

Campesino reads like a love story.  A young girl Griselda Ceja (from the infamous Ceja winery) spent her childhood days on this property, she falls in love with a local winemaker and they got married on the vineyard site in 2007.  This five acre vineyard is one of the most ideal vineyard sites (for Pinot) in the Valley, getting much needed temperate weather necessary for this varietal.   Located in the Carneros Region of the Napa Valley, the “Papi y Chula” vineyard is the source of this little gem.

Zinfandel Producer of the Year

Morgan Twain-Peterson reminds me of a scientist turned rock star or a rock star turned scientist.  Maybe he is a “Rockientist”.  All I can say, he really knows what he’s stuff.  Since his childhood days at age 5 – he made his first wine in Kindergarten, when you and I were playing with dinky toys!  He went on the get degrees from top notch schools, including a PhD – the guy is not even 40 and he has 30+ years of experience.  Worked around the globe in Australia and Bordeaux (Lynch Bages).  Also passed the Master of Wine exam!! When he created Bedrock our Rockientist blossomed as he fell in love with many old-vine vineyards.  I don’t need to tell you, but Bedrock has a cult-like following.
