Jeb Dunnuck 97 Points: “Offering more purity as well as precision in its ripe black cherries, black raspberries, crushed flowers, and forest floor aromas and flavors, the 2017 Pinot Noir Vanguard is a layered, multi-dimensional effort that has beautiful depth of fruit, remarkable purity, and polished tannins. It opens up with time in the glass and is a beautiful, seamless effort that plays with the crème de la crème in the vintage. Drink it any time over the coming 10-15 years.”
Winemaker Notes: “Nose is fruit-driven and expressive. Plush texture with blackberry notes and a cooling herbal touch. Darjeeling tea. Red fruit gives way to fine and lingering tannins. Brightened by a sense of biting into a fresh raspberry. Currently reserve and quiet on the palate, but rapidly changes with air. Bursting from the seams, but for the time being caged by sweet and fine tannins. Roundness is paired with serious Hilt structure and seamless power.
Tasting Notes: “The 2017 Pinot Noir Vanguard is a dark, powerful wine imbued with a real sense of gravitas. Black cherry, smoke, tar, licorice and earthy notes all run through the 2017 Vanguard. Muscular and dense in feel, the 2017 is likely to require at least a few years in bottle to be at its very best. There is a lot to look forward to, but readers need to be patient. Vineyard sites are 90% Sanford & Benedict and 10% Radian.

With bright acidity, a layered texture, and flawless balance, it’s a beautiful effort that will benefit from 2-3 years of bottle age and cruise for a decade or more.”
Winemaker Notes: “Still holding its cards close. Just getting started in its graceful evolution. Stony. White peach, rose petals, and green mango with subtle hints of oak. Peach and custard brioche. Silky texture with classic Vanguard lime zest character. Gains richness and complexity as it begins to stretch its wings with time and air. Full of tension and defined by its reserve but wrapped in a luxurious package of velvet fruit. A classic Vanguard that will benefit from a few years in the cellar.”
