Sorry, almost sold out, This  97 Point Spectacular Napa Cab Franc. “ A Napa version of the famous St. Emillion Cheval Blanc” Tiny Production

The Story: William Ferdinand Detert, known to friends and family as W.F., came to the US in 1866. He opened and operated the Argonaut Mine in Jackson, CA which he sold in 1912. W.F. transferred his income from gold mining into cattle ranches and other mining operations. From 1912 on, he owned the 22,000-acre Guenoc Ranch in Lake County as well as the Detert Ranch in Amador and El Dorado Counties and the Mayflower Gold Mine in Placer.

Richard Detert (great-grandfather of the winemaker), came to the US from Germany in 1909 at the age of 23 and eventually made his way to CA in 1926 to manage his uncle’s (W.F. Detert) various properties. Richard and their great-grandmother, Hedwig Detert (known to us as Mutti), lived in San Francisco and traveled to the Guenoc Ranch regularly. It was through these multi-day trips, prior to the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, that their great-grandmother fell in love with the Napa Valley. W.F Detert died in 1929.  Richard Detert died in 1951. At that time, our great-grandmother sold the Guenoc Ranch and used those proceeds to purchase 50 acres of the To Kalon Vineyard from Martin Stelling’s estate in Oakville in 1954. She renamed the property the “Detert Vineyard”.

Gorgeous aromas of violets, minerals, black cherry, and mocha. The flavors are equally seductive, with an energetic spine supporting a rush of black currant, cherry, and anise over dried herbs, minerals and spice. Very long and complex – this is so tempting now but will reward patience.

Vinous 97 Points: “The 2019 Cabernet Franc is off the charts. Creme de cassis, lavender, licorice, spice, and blackberry jam give this creamy Franc so much complexity. A classic wine in its flavor profile, depth, and overall structure. It is especially fine now that the Cabernet Franc influence is not as overpowering. What a wine…"

Winery Notes: “The 2019 is a blend of some of our oldest vines – which my grandfather replanted in 1979, and some younger vines that were replanted in 2010. The wine is a blend 90.5% Cabernet Franc, 9.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2019 Cabernet Franc leads with expressive floral blackberry, grilled herbs, and baking chocolate aromas. Supple and energetic in the mouth, showing a complex range of plum, blackberry, espresso, and cocoa powder flavors layered with minerals and herbs. All are balanced on an elegant framework with a long flavorful finish over fine-grained tannins. Has all the hallmarks of classic Detert Cabernet Franc – delicious now and sure to develop for 20+ years."
