Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points: “More steely, grassy notes emerge from the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Grassini Family Vineyard, a much smaller production release that saw 16 months in 20% new French oak. Plenty of stone fruits, sappy herbs, peach, and wet stone notes develop with time in the glass, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a rounded, elegant texture, beautiful purity, and a great finish. It can be enjoyed any time over the coming 10-15 years.”

Winery Notes:Grassini is a stalwart in our portfolio and one of the true stars of Happy Canyon. We have made wine here since 2008, and the vineyard always delivers. We have three blocks in which we employ special pruning, canopy management (dappled light leafing on the afternoon side of the rows) and crop load strategies, and we limit irrigation to keep plant balance at lower yields. We harvest, press and ferment each block (or portion of a block) separately in a mixture of French oak barrels stainless steel. The result is highly complex, expressive wine that simply screams Grassini.

The 2018 wine was crafted from our favorite French oak barrels (88%) and stainless steel. (12%). 20% of the barrels were new. The wine was aged on its lees for 15 months before bottling. The wine shows its usual kaleidoscopic aromas and flavors, with nice lift from vibrant acidity. “

GRIMM’S BLUFF VINEYARD – The Grimm’s Bluff was planted solely for the purpose of producing the highest quality grapes and has been lovingly farmed with Biodynamic methods since its inception. We source fruit from three blocks here, the largest section in the unique head trained section of the vineyard. Careful farming and low irrigation result in small clusters and very low yields for this variety. These grapes demand fermentation and aging in French oak barriques and specially designed cigar shaped barrels, sur lie, in order to match the texture of the wine and to allow for a long slow evolution. Wines have extraordinary concentration, excellent acidity and a distinct mineral edge.

Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points: “Tasted out of barrel, the 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Grimm’s Bluff showed beautifully, with a rounded, sexy, concentrated style as well as notes of lemon butter, tangerine, mint, and white flowers. It offers bright acidity, a layered, supple texture, and a great finish. It’s up with the finest Sauvignon Blancs coming out of California today.”

Vinous 95 Points: “The 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Grimm’s Bluff Vineyard is bright, crisp and beautifully delineated, but also has plenty of the textural richness that is such a distinctive signature of the Dragonette Sauvignon Blancs. Candied lemon peel, marzipan, white flowers and crushed rocks all pulse through this racy, inviting Sauvignon Blanc. The Grimm’s Bluff is such a gorgeous wine.”
Winemaker Notes: “We hand harvested and sorted in a series of selective picks. Within hours, we gently pressed the grapes and transferred the juice directly to the tank for overnight settling, before being moved into French oak barrels. Primary fermentation was completed in the barrel, with native yeasts and temperature control. We blocked malolactic fermentation to retain freshness and aged the wines on their lees for 16 months before bottling.”

Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points: “The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Vogelzang Vineyard comes from more gravelly soils and spent 12 months in 10% new oak followed by six months in the tank. It’s the most exotic of the releases and has a big perfume of exotic flowers, white currants, figs, and honeysuckle. Beautifully textured, medium-bodied, with good acidity but plenty of richness and length, it’s another singular, gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc from this estate that’s up with the best of the best”

Winemaker Notes: “We hand harvested and sorted in a series of selective picks. Within hours, we gently pressed the grapes and transferred the juice directly to a mixture of stainless steel and oak barrels. Primary fermentation was completed in both tank and barrel, with native yeasts and temperature control. We blocked malolactic fermentation to retain freshness and aged the wines on their lees for 12 months, before making this reserve selection. We then aged the wines for 6 additional months before blending and bottling”

VOGELZANG VINEYARD – The Vogelzang is situated on a gently sloping bed of well drained, gravelly loam soil with Serpentinite. The vineyard is well established and has been carefully pruned, leafed and deficit-irrigated to focus the plant’s energy on fruit development. We purchase these grapes from several distinct blocks in the vineyard and farm them on a per acre basis, so that we can control all farming practices, including pruning, canopy management, yield control, irrigation and differential harvesting of our blocks.
