The BEST Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted this year!

I taste a lot of wines every day of the year, some better some worse.  Grey Stack 2012 Sauvignon Blanc is definitely the BEST Sauvignon Blanc I have tasted this year – far surpassing those previously made by this winery and the 100’s of others I tasted so far this calendar year.

Grey Stack Cellars is hidden away in the Bennett Valley AVA in Sonoma County, one of the newest and smallest AVA’s in the United States. Vineyards and farming are truly the heart of Grey Stack Cellars and behind the traditional rock walls that surround their vineyards lies the secret to creating renegade wines: the cool marine climate and volcanic soils that can only be found in the micro-climates of Bennett Valley.

In contrast to 2011’s tough growing season, 2012 season was picture perfect right up to harvest. Continuing a tradition started in 2006, this wine was fermented in stainless steel to preserve its verve and then aged for 4 months in 50% stainless steel and 50% mostly neutral oak. The unique Italian clone grown in Rosemary’s Block delivers its unique pineapple and passion fruit flavor profile with a nose that can be detected from several feet away. Bottled unfiltered and unfined, this wine may develop a slight haze in the bottle. Ignore it and enjoy the wine.
