Matt Murphy grew up in Arkansas among a “wine-savvy family”. While studying molecular, cellular, and developmental biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder, Matt followed his emerging appreciation of fine wine, and his love of the land, and worked a summer at Signorello Estate in Napa Valley. At Signorello, Matt found that he loved working in the vineyard, and the collaborative nature of making wine. After graduating he moved west and continued his quest to learn more about winemaking the vineyards. After a decade of exploring, Matt and his parents purchased an estate and started from scratch. Today the vineyard is very well-regarded, as they sell grapes to almost one dozen wineries. The Murphys produce a small amount of wine under their own label Presqu’ile (pronounced press-keel) as well.

Vinous 96 Points: “The 2020 Pinot Noir Sanford and Benedict is outrageously beautiful. Rich, creamy, and textured, the S&B captures all of the pedigree of this site. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice, and pine build in a sumptuous Pinot that hits all the right notes.“

Winemaker Notes: “2020 was a vintage that kept everyone on their toes. The growing season began early and was marked by a very mild spring with below-average rainfall. June and July were pretty standard and we anticipated a very solid harvest. That was until we saw a dramatic heat spike on Labor Day which was followed a few weeks later by another historic heat spike. Managing pick dates was essential and we were able to produce some exceptional wines in 2020. You will notice the wines to be more fruit-forward and accessible at an early age.”
