LAST CALL 4 This resonating 96 Point Thomas Rivers Brown Heritage Selection Cab is a real “gem”

The 16-acre Gemstone Estate vineyard is truly a study in terroir. Situated on a gradual, west-facing slope in the Yountville appellation of the Napa Valley, this complex and diverse site has gravelly alluvial soil layered over loamy sandstone bedrock, avoiding the vigor of deep, rich soil. The vineyard is divided into 20 micro-blocks; including eight clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, two clones each of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and one clone of Chardonnay. All of the vines are densely planted to a variety of rootstocks carefully matched to the soil. Each clonal block is farmed and fermented individually, yielding a distinctive palette of flavors from which Gemstone wines are built. Winemaker = Thomas Rivers Brown

Winery Notes: “Our Heritage Selection Estate Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the depth and complexity of our vineyard’s 16 different heritage clones. Fruit-forward, opulent and dense, our winemaker has an extensive palette of unique flavors from across our vineyard from which to choose. Each of the terroir-driven  micro-blocks of the vineyard are vinified individually from harvest to barrel. The myriad winemaking and viticultural possibilities exhibit themselves in the inimitable layers of complexity unique to Gemstone Vineyard wines.”

Thomas Rivers Brown Notes: “The 2018 Heritage Selection is full bodied and smooth, with bright blue and dark berry fruits, mocha, exotic spice and minerality across the palate. The finish is long with silky tannins that will support aging beautifully for the next 20+ years but is crafted to achieve balance and character suitable for enjoyment upon release.”

Vinous 96 Points: “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Heritage Selection, from the back part of the property, is plump, juicy and full of character. Inky dark fruit, mocha, floral notes and spice . All the elements come together so nicely. Picking a bit earlier than in the past helps preserve freshness as well as energy. Time in the glass brings out the wine’s volume and resonance. The juicy, creamy style works well here. Inky dark red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal and new leather build into the resonant finish. I find a bit better balance here than in the Alluvial Selection.”
