Wolf Family was created in 1997 by Jane and Doug Wolf. In 2013 they sold the property and purchased another great existing vineyard on White Lane a stone’s throw away. With well over two decades of great winemaking from their “ace” Karen Culler, they continue to amaze me. They still make two Cabernets, one 100% Estate and the Phaedrus, which is a blend of two excellent Napa vineyards (The Wolf Estate & the Montgomery Vineyard in Calistaga).

The new Wolf Family Estate on White Lane in St Helena is a stone’s throw away from their old Ingelwood Estate vineyard and offers all the same unctuous flavors that St Helena is known. The new Phaedrus offers up gobs of blackberry, and black stone fruits, a whiff of tobacco and a rich but balanced texture. The (new) Montgomery Vineyard in Calistoga gives the wine more of its delicious dark fruit aroma, while the palate is full bodied and with a perfectly balanced acid- tannin profile. The 20 month barrel aging in French Oak barrels (2/3 new) gives the wine a toasty and complex aroma that deserves a long cellaring. As always a very small production.
