Late fall is always a time of excitement, many great Cabernets reach the “shores” of Golden Gate Wine Cellars. Among them Carter Cellars, crafted by my friend and ace-winemaker Mike Smith. The current “stash” of 2018 although amazing in quality, are unfortunately very small in the quantity department Please don’t take it out on the messenger! Mother nature yielded way less for Carter, so I got less! Most of the 2018 Carter wines scored 98-99 points, a few 95-97 so not a bad run!

Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Beckstoffer To Kalon “The Grand Daddy” 98+ Points
Retail 190 – GGWC 184.99

Jeb Dunnuck 98+ Points: “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon The Grand Daddy is just about pure magic in a glass, and it will probably merit a triple-digit rating in another 4-5 years. A stunning array of blueberries, melted licorice, cassis, scorched earth, violets, and tobacco soar from the glass of this deep, saturated purple (almost blue) 2018. Gorgeously concentrated, full-bodied, packed with sweet fruit, yet still weightless and elegant on the palate, it’s another magical wine from Carter Cellars. Drink bottles any time over the coming 25+ years or more.”

Carter Cellars 2018 CS Beckstoffer To Kalon “The O.G.” 99 Points
Retail 199.99 – GGWC 194.99

Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points: “In the same realm as the 2016, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon The O.G. is a magical wine and reveals a deep purple color as well as incredible cassis and blackberry fruits, loads of violets, spice, and floral nuances, building yet sweet tannins, no hard edges, and a monster of a finish. It shows the purity and elegance that are the hallmarks of the 2018 vintage yet backs it up with stunning concentration, a multidimensional, layered mouthfeel, and an incredible, singular personality. I kept coming back to this wine in my tastings and followed the bottle for two days, at which point we just drank it. It should evolve for 25-30 years.”
Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon “Weitz” 96 Points
Retail 154.99 GGWC 149.99

Jeb Dunnuck 96 Points: “The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Weitz Vineyard comes from a site in the northern part of the valley and more red, volcanic soils. It reminds me of the 2016 with its iron/iodine-like character as well as beautiful mulled red and black fruits, Asian spices, chocolate, and loamy earthy aromas and flavors. This big, rich, opulent beauty has sweet tannins, a rocking mid-palate, and a great finish. It’s already impossible to resist yet has two decades of longevity ahead of it.”
Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon “Three Kings” 98 Points
Retail 189.99  GGWC 184.99

Jeb Dunnuck  98 Points: “Another release from this great vineyard, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard The Three Kings comes from a single block and is all clone 7. This rocking wine is pure To Kalon with its huge, monster bouquet of crème de cassis, spiced plums, flowery incense, tobacco, and cedar pencil notes. It’s always a big, rich wine, yet it still shows balance, elegant, fine tannins, and a blockbuster styled finish. It’s another magical Cabernet from this team that can be enjoyed any time over the coming 25 years or more.”
Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Blend “Hossfeld Coliseum” 97 Points
Retail 94.00 GGWC 89.99

Jeb Dunnuck 97 Points: “A Merlot-dominated blend, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Hossfeld Coliseum offers a gorgeous, “Vieux Château Certain-like” sexiness in its blackcurrant and macerated black cherry fruit as well as notes of chocolate, smoke tobacco, cigar, and spice. This full-bodied beauty has no hard edges, a beautiful blend of richness and freshness, sweet tannins, and a great finish. It’s a beautiful, powerful wine that stays light and graceful. Drink it over the coming 15 years or more.”

Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon “Fortuna” 95 Points
Retail 114.99 GGWC 109.99

Jeb Dunnuck 95 Points: “One of the more forward wines in the lineup, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Fortuna Vineyard sports a deep purple hue as well a big bouquet of ripe plums, Asian spices, leafy herbs, and a touch of flowers. Full-bodied, beautifully balanced, and silky on the palate, it delivers plenty of richness and depth yet has a terrific weightless style. It picks up more structure with time in the glass, so don’t let its upfront charm fool you, it’s going to keep for 15+ years.”
Carter Cellars 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon “Carter” 99 Points
Retail 174.99 GGWC 169.99

Jeb Dunnuck 99 Points: “A killer effort, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Carter offers that rare, magical mix of opulence, power, elegant, and freshness that you rarely come across, offering a kaleidoscope-like array of crème de cassis, toasted spice, dried violets, blackberries, smoked tobacco, and a distinct sense of minerality, it’s a beast of a wine on the palate that somehow stays beautifully balanced, elegant, and seamless. It’s impossible to resist today yet should cruise for two decades.”
