For the better part of the last 19 years Anthony Biagi has been crafting wines in Napa Valley for Paraduxx, Neal Family Vineyards, PlumpJack, and Cade Wineries and currently for Hourglass, Sinegal Estate, and Amici his own label. Following his parent’s sage advice “Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life,” he finds himself extremely fortunate that he has been able to do what he loves from the day he graduated from college. Following a dream he set decades ago, Anthony founded Patria (homeland) in 2013 with Kimberly Jones.

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc. The wine’s aromas of black stone fruit, chocolate and a touch of spice jump out of the glass upon impact. This full-bodied youngster is layered with lush black stone fruit gushing with intensity and a whiff of toasty vanilla. This fan-favorite can be enjoyed immediately (decant for 60 minutes) and should drink well for 10+years. It finishes with structured, but silky tannins.

Back in 1995 Russell and Victoria were dating and their favorite game was “guess the wine”.  After that they started taking regular trips to California’s wine country meeting some of the best winemakers.  Soon they were searching for property in California. It was Kal Showket (Heidi Barrett was his winemaker) who helped develop their estate vineyard and also “gave” Russell 1 ton of his estate Cabernet and the rest…. is history.  From their on out Russell has produced a bunch of 100 point and many more 94-99 pointers!  I am proud to introduce 2 new Pinot Noirs from his portfolio that will wow your senses!!

Winemaker’s Notes: “If you have opened one of our 2013 Rita’s you know how unique this wine is. The nose is all about roasted meats, dark cherry and sassafras. Plush and round, the tannins are very refined, but always present. The incredibly steep hills that this wine comes from, produces only 1 to 1 ½ tons per acre. The vines are so stressed, that each cluster weighs less than half of what our Sonoma County clusters weight. The resulting wine ends up having an amazing intensity because of it.”

Parker Review of the 2013 – 95 Points: “The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills is made from Clones 777, 115 and 667. This is a spicy, earthy Pinot Noir with notes of pomegranate, raspberry jam, loamy soil and sassafras. It is medium to full-bodied and completely different than the North Coast Pinots. Nevertheless, it is complex, but more Côtes de Beaune in orientation than his other offerings. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.”

Chardonnay of the Week


Roar Winery is the brain child of the “other” Gary – Gary Franscioni and his wife Rosella.  Gary who also owns the GARYS’ vineyard with Gary Pisoni, planted various vineyards in 1996 (Sierra Mar, Rosella, Soberanos and Garys’).  The Franscioni family sells over 80% of its fruit to various wineries, retaining only a small amount for themselves.  That said, the Roar wines are heavily allocated and very limited.  The 2014 Santa Lucia Highlands is a blend of all the vineyards Gary owns and farms.

Winemaker Tasting Notes: “Our 2014 Chardonnay brings hints of lemon, banana, and honeysuckle to the lush, dense aromatics of ripe melon. Over time, scents of straw and graphite mingle with the fruit to draw the overall experience into a sweet, viscous minerality. This is definitely a great Spring/Summer wine, a blend of 77% Grenache Blanc 19% Picpoul Blanc 2% Roussanne 2% Viognier.  The Grenache Blanc (blend) is grown on the north facing slopes of the vineyard atop the limestone rich “Adelaida Stone” that underlies the property. Reminiscent of the wines of Southern France, this Grenache Blanc has aromas and flavors of honey, white flowers, melons and pear. Delicious on its own, this wine also pairs beautifully with hearty salads, prosciutto & melon, and anything from the sea.

Under the Radar 94 Point Napa Cabernet


The Snowden Ranch lies on the eastern slopes of the Napa Valley overlooking the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena.  Premium wine grapes have been farmed on the property since it was homesteaded in 1878.  The Snowdens came to the ranch in 1955 and since then four generations of the Snowden family have walked its sunlit vineyards and shadowed woods.  The vineyards are within a few hundred yards of the Rutherford and St. Helena appellations.  The Howell Mountain appellation lies a few miles to the north.  The terroir-driven wines reflect the confluence of these appellations – the perfume of St. Helena, the leather of Rutherford, the structure and depth of mountain fruit.  The wines are made by the Diana Snowden Seyses, who is also the winemaker for famed Domaine Dujac, which her in-laws own.  She spends her time between France and the Napa Valley, where she lives with her husband and their two children

The 2013 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon “The Ranch”  is a blend of 75% Cabernet, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.  The wine greets you with a bouquet of blueberries, blackberry, and hints of seasonded aromas (probably from the Cab Franc). On the palate this lush, medium to full-bodied youngster offers flavors of black chocolate, cherries and anise, with a plush chalky texture.  The wine is elegant and finishes with soft silky tannins. As always, the Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon ‘The Ranch’ can be enjoyed immediately and for the next decade.

94 Point Rated “Budget” Pinot Noir


Nestled on a sunny coastal ridge, overlooking the Pacific Ocean a mile below, the “True Sonoma Coast” vineyard is one of the closest, if not the closest, to the ocean in all of California. From the vineyard you can see the breaking surf and the misty silhouettes of Bodega Head and Pt. Reyes far below. The vineyard’s high elevation above the coastal fog and its proximity to the ocean provide a gentle, sunny and temperate climate that has proved to be very favorable for the slow and even ripening of Burgundian varietals. Fort Ross Vineyard has just received wonderful news — the establishment of the FORT ROSS-SEAVIEW AVA, a limited mountainous area overlooking the Pacific Ocean, north of the Russian River that was carved out of the expansive Sonoma Coast AVA. This all-estate grown property has been on fire ever since Ace Winemaker Jeff Pisoni took over the winemaking reins in 2008.  The vines are close to 20 years old, so the maturity is paying off dividends for this great property.

Pressed very gently, aged in mostly used oak on lees, the wine has high acid, a great modest pH and only 13% alcohol. Sauvignon Blanc purists and fans of great Pouilly-Fumé will adore this wine. It is listed on the French Laundry’s wine list.”

Our deepest condolences

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I need to report that Barbara Richards passed away.

Barbara and I go back to their very first release, 20 years ago –  a LONG TIME. Her son, Sheldon had been making the Paloma wines for many years and will will continue his parents’ legacy for years to come.

Lets remember Barbara (and her late husband Jim) and celebrate their lives with a bottle of Paloma (if you have one), they surely would appreciate it.
