A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Cabernet Franc. The wine’s aromas of black stone fruit, chocolate and a touch of spice jump out of the glass upon impact. This full-bodied youngster is layered with lush black stone fruit gushing with intensity and a whiff of toasty vanilla. This fan-favorite can be enjoyed immediately (decant for 60 minutes) and should drink well for 10+years. It finishes with structured, but silky tannins.

Back in 1995 Russell and Victoria were dating and their favorite game was “guess the wine”.  After that they started taking regular trips to California’s wine country meeting some of the best winemakers.  Soon they were searching for property in California. Winemaker’s Notes: “If you have opened one of our 2013 Rita’s you know how unique this wine is. The nose is all about roasted meats, dark cherry and sassafras. Plush and round, the tannins are very refined, but always present. The incredibly steep hills that this wine comes from, produces only 1 to 1 ½ tons per acre. The vines are so stressed, that each cluster weighs less than half of what our Sonoma County clusters weight. The resulting wine ends up having an amazing intensity because of it.”

Parker Review of the 2013 – 95 Points: “The 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills is made from Clones 777, 115 and 667. This is a spicy, earthy Pinot Noir with notes of pomegranate, raspberry jam, loamy soil and sassafras. It is medium to full-bodied and completely different than the North Coast Pinots. Nevertheless, it is complex, but more Côtes de Beaune in orientation than his other offerings. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.”

A blend of 52% Syrah and 48% Merlot from Hudson Vineyards, the 2013 Variation One is a powerhouse. But for all its dark, brooding character and solid build, this wine is surprisingly bright and fresh on the palate, with flavors of red cherries, roasted meat, and orange liqueur and chocolate. It continues to open and reveal notes of campfire, baked fruits, and wet gravel. Tannins are dry and firm, helping to bolster the broad, expansive impression.

Trespass is a small 5 acre all estate property in northwestern St. Helena at the base of Spring Mountain. The wines are hand-crafted by Kirk Venge who has been making wine since he was a little child under the tutelage of his dad Nils Venge (the first 100 point winemaker in the US with his 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet).  Kirk has wowed us with many great wines (Beau Vigne, Macauley, Honeycutt, Igneous, Venge, etc). Nils told me that at pre-school age Kirk knew he was going to be winemaker

Our friends at Trespass crafted yet another remarkable wine! Kirk Venge does not skip a beat with this latest release. It is beyond awesome. I would almost rate this is the best Cabernet Franc in the Napa Valley, but who am I to say. This wine has an amazing dense purple hue and a touch of anise and black currant on the nose. Extraction would make you think it is Syrah, yet this wine is amazingly elegant and offers up a storm of gorgeous, elegant black stone fruit alongside its full-bodied armor. Great balance, with the right amount of fruit and acid. The wine’s finishes with a long silkiness. ONLY 125 cases produced.

Coming from the Coombsville southeastern corner, the 2013 Arietta Cabernet Sauvignon expresses the best attributes of this heralded variety. Aromas of mint, smoke, dark black fruits and sandalwood rise from the glass even as the wine is poured. Notes of black tea, vanilla bean and forest floor follow on the palate. This is a highly perfumed, complex red wine, with firm tannins that build on the finish – a good sign for long aging.

Galloni 95 Points: “The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon is dark and juicy from the very first taste. Sweet red cherry, plum, spice, new leather and rose petal meld together in the glass. Ripe, succulent and forward, this flashy Cabernet Sauvignon has enough softness in its contours to drink well with minimal cellaring, although it also clearly has enough depth and density to age well. Roar Winery is the brain child of the “other” Gary – Gary Franscioni and his wife Rosella.  Gary who also owns the GARYS’ vineyard with Gary Pisoni, planted various vineyards in 1996 (Sierra Mar, Rosella, Soberanos and Garys’).  The Franscioni family sells over 80% of its fruit to various wineries, retaining only a small amount for themselves.  That said, the Roar wines are heavily allocated and very limited.  The 2014 Santa Lucia Highlands is a blend of all the vineyards Gary owns and farms.

This is definitely a great Spring/Summer wine, a blend of 77% Grenache Blanc 19% Picpoul Blanc 2% Roussanne 2% Viognier.  The Grenache Blanc (blend) is grown on the north facing slopes of the vineyard atop the limestone rich “Adelaida Stone” that underlies the property. Reminiscent of the wines of Southern France, this Grenache Blanc has aromas and flavors of honey, white flowers, melons and pear. Delicious on its own, this wine also pairs beautifully with hearty salads, prosciutto & melon, and anything from the sea.

Under the Radar 94 Point Napa Cabernet


The Snowden Ranch lies on the eastern slopes of the Napa Valley overlooking the towns of Rutherford and St. Helena.  Premium wine grapes have been farmed on the property since it was homesteaded in 1878.  The Snowdens came to the ranch in 1955 and since then four generations of the Snowden family have walked its sunlit vineyards and shadowed woods.  The vineyards are within a few hundred yards of the Rutherford and St. Helena appellations.  The Howell Mountain appellation lies a few miles to the north.  The terroir-driven wines reflect the confluence of these appellations – the perfume of St. Helena, the leather of Rutherford, the structure and depth of mountain fruit.  The wines are made by the Diana Snowden Seyses, who is also the winemaker for famed Domaine Dujac, which her in-laws own.  She spends her time between France and the Napa Valley, where she lives with her husband and their two children

The 2013 Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon “The Ranch”  is a blend of 75% Cabernet, 15% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.  The wine greets you with a bouquet of blueberries, blackberry, and hints of seasonded aromas (probably from the Cab Franc). On the palate this lush, medium to full-bodied youngster offers flavors of black chocolate, cherries and anise, with a plush chalky texture.  The wine is elegant and finishes with soft silky tannins. As always, the Snowden Cabernet Sauvignon ‘The Ranch’ can be enjoyed immediately and for the next decade.

PAUL LATO has been producing some of the most amazing wines over the past decade and has not gone unnoticed by the press with many 96-98 point ratings.  All of his bottlings are very limited productions, but amazingly well-crafted.  Paul is probably one of the most meticulous winemakers I’ve ever met.  Attention to detail from start to finish.  He is involved in the entire process from day one. From harvest into dormancy and pruning; all the way to dropping fruit during the growing season, hand-picking only the very best bunches his vines yield.  He’d rather only sell two barrels of amazing wine versus selling six of “OK” wine.

Paul Lato was born in Poland. He worked as a certified Sommelier in Toronto’s most exclusive restaurants and visited California for the first time in the early 1990′s. Jim Clendenen (ABC & Clendenen wines) told Paul to just pack up and move here, and he would show him the ropes – 14 years later he did make the move and took a job at Bien Nacido vineyards for just $10.00 per hour, he did get free “lodging” at the bunkhouse in the vineyard. The Bien Nacido owner pushed Paul to make his own wine. With some tutoring (he observed the best in the business for some years, asked a lot of questions and experimented a lot) he made his first wines and by chance met Robert Parker.  Parker asked him if “he” was the Polish Sommelier that makes wine and said that he wanted to taste it.  Parker told him that he would tell him immediately if the wine was the real McCoy or …. (slang for excrement) Parker was blown away and gave Paul Lato a rave review. From then on, Paul’s new career was born.

I met Paul in 2005 and have been a big fan since day one, and could say that we have become good friends along the way.

Paul Lato 2014 Chardonnay “Belle de Jour” Hilliard Bruce Vineyard ~ Retail 80.00 – GGWC 76.99
This is the fifth release from this vineyard and has created a real following.  I would be hard pressed, but I can tell you that this one is every bit as good as the 2012 (95 Pt WA) and 2013 (96 Pt WA) bottlings, maybe a touch more focused and more elegant! A real “skilled” winemaker gem! Due to the success with the 2012 & 2013 vintage I have a lot of demand for this bottling and it will be sold out well before it arrives at my store!

Paul Lato Notes: “Duvarita is a biodynamic-in-the-making vineyard, with a purity, brightness, and provincial beauty to the fruit. Fresh aromas of yellow apple and lime rind arise on the clean and crisp nose, while fully-rounded tones of butterscotch and meyer lemon envelop the palate in juicy bliss. The finish is long and mouth-watering with toasted hazelnut and honeysuckle notes lingering.”

Robert Parker 2013 Review 96 Points: “Reminding me of a Chardonnay from Mark Aubert in Sonoma, Lato’s 2013 Chardonnay Belle du Jour has gorgeous richness and ripeness in its white flower, brioche, toasted nut and apple blossom-laced bouquet. This gives way to a fabulous Chardonnay that has bright acidity, a full, rich mid-palate, and a seamless texture that carries beautifully pure fruit. This is another wine that makes a mockery of all the low-alcohol, overly acidic Chardonnays that seem to be the rage these days. While the most elegant and silky of the Chardonnays, it has terrific fruit intensity and is a joy to drink. I’d lean toward drinking bottles over the coming 4-5 years, but I’m sure it will evolve nicely for longer.”

Paul Lato 2014 Chardonnay “Souvenir” Sierra Madre Vineyard, Santa Maria Valley ~ Retail 80.00 – GGWC 76.99
This is a more than worthy follow-up to the 2011,12 & 13 bottlings which received 96-97 Point ratings! This wine might be Paul’s boldest production, yet another gem in my book.  It is by far Paul’s smallest bottling, only 4 barrels produced.  The 2014 is a carbon copy of the 2011 that received rave reviews from my clients and critics alike! I’d be shocked not to see similar scores, or higher!

Paul Lato Notes: “21-year-old Wente clone vines contribute to the classic, precise nature of this naturally-pleasing Chardonnay. Golden straw-colored in the glass, notes of clover honey and roasted plantain notes emerge from the nose with great clarity. The mouthfeel is electric and buoyant, with wet limestone minerality and a stunning swell of lemon-like acidity that enlivens the palate.”

Robert Parker 2013 review 96 Points: “From a tiny 4.5-acre block in one of the oldest vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, the 2013 Chardonnay le Souvenir Sierra Madre Vineyard saw 14 months in 55% new French oak. Medium to full-bodied, lively, full-flavored and with vibrant acidity, it offers up ample, mineral-laced notes of apple blossom, citrus, honeysuckle and classy oak. Still tight and backwards, it needs a year or so to come together and should be at its best from 2017-2023.”

Paul Lato 2014 Chardonnay “East of Eden” Pisoni Vineyard ~ 82.00 – GGWC 77.99 
This is the Fourth Release of the “East of Eden” Chardonnay from the famed Pisoni Vineyard. Only a few barrels were produced, and I was lucky to get a few cases from Paul as they were all earmarked for his mailing list and for restaurants like French Laundry, Per Se, Gary Danko, etc.
This is probably the best rendition of a 1er Cru Montrachet produced in California.  As you are well aware of Paul’s meticulous wine-making skills and strategy, nothing escapes this guru of precision! I’d say that this wine is very similar to the great 2013 vintage, which received 97 Points from Parker!

Paul Lato notes: “The low-yields of Pisoni Vineyard contribute to this muscular and delineated wine, which several Master Sommelier’s have compared to the legendary Corton of Burgundy. The unique aromatic profile shows alpine flower along with sea water elements and a touch of sweet almond paste. The palate has a textured, tannin-like structure with subdued mineral tones that allow for white floral and tropical qualities to lift up beautifully.”

Robert Parker 2013 – 97 Points: “There are only six barrels of the extraordinary 2013 Chardonnay East of Eden Pisoni Vineyard and it comes from arguably the greatest vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, Gary Pisoni’s Pisoni Vineyard. Aged 14 months in 67% new French oak and hitting 14.8% natural alcohol, it has incredible minerality (the soils here are granite) to go with classic stone fruits, flint, white flowers and classy oak on the nose. Full-bodied, beautifully textured, layered and pure, it’s always lively and graceful on the palate, with a crisp finish. It’s another wine that will have over a decade of longevity.”

Paul Lato 2014 Pinot Noir “Seabiscuit” Zotovich Vineyard ~Retail 90.00 – GGWC 84.99
This latest Zotovich “Seabiscuit” bottling is by far Paul’s best effort to date! I would say that it will rival his 97 Point rated 2013 version!  As it is the case with all of Paul’s wines, I get limited amounts of this great gems, so I can only remind you how great and limited they are!

Paul Lato Notes: “Robust and explosive, this is an exquisite expression of a previously-neglected vineyard that is now becoming a thoroughbred with the proper attention. The nose is huge, bursting with redcurrant, blueberry, and iodine in rich array. The strength of the aromatics is matched on the palate as sturdy, age-worthy tannins reveal wave after wave of dried fruit and hard spice.”

Robert Parker 2013- 97 Points: “One of the standouts in this stacked lineup was the 2013 Pinot Noir Seabiscuit Zotovich Vineyard. Aged 16 months in 70% new French oak and the greatest Pinot Noir I’ve tasted from this vineyard, it offers incredible notes of cassis, raspberries, dried earth, spice and that classic saltiness that’s so common from the Sta. Rita Hills. Full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional and elegant, with perfectly integrated acidity and polished tannin, it’s a fabulous Pinot Noir that will have more than a decade of longevity. Unfortunately, there were on eight barrels produced.”

Paul Lato Pinot Noir “Suerte” Solomon Hills ~Retail 90.00 – GGWC 84.99
Paul is not slowing down one bit, and this workhorse “Suerte” will amaze many Pinot lovers alike! It shows gorgeously young, and will even improve a lot more in the years to come!  Only a few barrels produced! This 2014 is any bit as good as the 97 point rated 2013 vintage!

Paul Lato Notes: “Solomon Hills is a Grand-Cru-in-the-making site of great character, arguably the most unique in the Santa Maria Valley. The aromatics show gunpowder, black cherry, and strawberry jam notes of deep intensity and generosity. The palate is pure velvet, seamlessly balancing rich, tarry earth tones that cling to the palate with a bright acid lift towards the finish. Striking in both beauty and intelligence.”

Robert Parker 2013 – 97 Points: “Possibly the greatest wine to date from this incredible site that’s located just south of Santa Maria, Lato’s 2013 Pinot Noir Solomon Hills Vineyard Suerte offers sensational levels of sweet red fruits, currants, forest floor, spring flowers and salty minerality on both the nose and palate. Sexy, seamless and elegant, with its acidity perfectly integrated into its core of sweet fruit, it doesn’t put a foot wrong, has fine tannin and is already hard to resist. Nevertheless, it should be better in another 1-2 years and drink well through 2023+.

Paul Lato 2014 Pinot Noir “Lancelot” Pisoni Vineyard ~ Retail 97.00 – GGWC 94.99
The “flagship” wine of Paul’s Portfolio!  I don’t need to tell you that the Pisoni vineyard is often compared to the best (1er and Grand Cru) vineyards in Burgundy, and Paul puts a real Burgundian twist on this source!  This wine equals the best of the previous Lancelot bottlings and could even surpass it!  VERY LIMITED!

Paul Lato Notes: “Deep red ruby in the glass, this voluptuous Pinot Noir has a dizzying aromatic profile bursting with lavender, warm asphalt, and salt-cured meats. The palate has great depth in fruit and earth qualities reflective of the one-of-a-kind Pisoni Vineyard. Planted over 30 years ago with what are rumored to be cuttings from one of the finest Grand Cru’s of Burgundy, this singular site continues to amaze in the balance, concentration, and ageability of fruit it delivers.”

Robert Parker 2013 – 95+ Points: “One of the tighter and backward efforts in the vintage, the 2013 Pinot Noir Lancelot Pisoni Vineyard has a focused, pure and edgy style in its sweet black cherry, blackberry, spring flowers and distinct wet rock-like minerality. It shows more rose petal and floral notes with air, but also closed down slightly, so give bottles another year or two in the cellar. This is a gorgeous Pinot Noir that’s a solid step up from the 2012.”

Paul Lato 2014 Pinot Noir “Contender” Drumm Canyon ~ Retail 90.00 – GGWC 84.99
This might be the best Contender bottling to date!  This rendition of the Drumm Canyon Vineyard “Contender” will make you (happily) dream of a 1er Cru Pommard at a much lower price point!  This latest release is Paul’s best effort to-date and I have only 5 cases of this wine to offer!

Paul Lato Notes: “A highly-perfumed nose of lavender and sweet tobacco alongside lush wild berry notes is beautifully indicative of the Drum Canyon site. The palate is an exotic mélange of hard spice, leather, and bramble fruit, with a surprising and welcome acidity that lends a levity to the muscularity at its core. Like Marlon Brando on the waterfront, it shows that intensity and gracefulness can be a part of the same package.”

Robert Parker 2013- 94 Points: “Made from two suitcase clones (Swan and Calera) grown on a steep, south-facing slope in the Sta. Rita Hills, the 2013 Pinot Noir The Contender Drum Canyon Vineyard has discrete oak in its blackcurrant, black cherry, underbrush, rose petal and spice-laced bouquet. This gives way to a ripe, nicely concentrated and juicy Pinot Noir that has bright acidity and a taut, energetic texture. It’s currently lacking a touch of the integration found in the other releases, yet is still beautiful. Give it a year in bottle and enjoy through 2023.”

Paul Lato 2014 Syrah “Cinematique” Larner Vineyard ~ Retail 95.00 – GGWC 89.99
This is in my book “THE” best Cinematique to-date bar-none! I believe strongly that is equal, if not better than the great 2012, 2008 and 2007 vintages (97 Point rating).  I’d be surprised that this wine will not see very high 90 scores again!

Robert Parker 2012 – 97 Points: “On another level, the 2012 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard (92.5% Syrah, 5% Viognier and 2.5% Grenache aged in 50% new French oak) has an incredible perfume of sweet blackberry, raspberry, crushed violets, coffee bean and bay leaf to go with a medium to full-bodied, silky, seamless and ethereally textured profile on the palate. Robert Parker 2013 – 95 Points: “A bigger, richer and more concentrated effort than the Larner Grenache, the 2013 Grenache Bien Nacido Vineyard offers lots of cassis and black raspberry fruit to go with underlying notes of wet gravel, shrimp broth, peppery herbs, licorice and pepper. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, elegant and multi-dimensional on the palate, with a weightless mouthfeel, it’s acidity is nicely integrated and it never puts a foot wrong. Given its balance and overall purity, it’s a killer drink today, but it will evolve beautifully.”
