Two brothers (John & Steve Dragonette) teamed up with their good buddy Brandon Sparks-Gillis to pursue their live-long dream to make wine.  They gained valuable experiences at wineries like Sine Qua Non, Torbreck, Fiddlehead Cellars before they started this awesome venture.  Over the past couple of years the press has been (rightfully so) generous to these three great guys.  They source from some of the most sought after vineyards in Santa Barbara, Santa Rita Hills & Santa Ynez.

This wine displays aromas of deep, concentrated red fruits (Bing cherry, strawberry and sweet cranberry) along with intense mineral notes of sea shell, and wet stones and a fascinating mélange of fresh and dried herbs (bay leaf, anise, thyme, tarragon) and smoky nori. On the palate the wine is rich, yet measured, as concentrated fresh red fruits intermingle with herbs and stones in a light to medium bodied frame. A solid tannic spine and notable, tangy acids provide citrus notes and intrigue, and the wine dances across the palate to a satisfying, contemplative finish.

96 Point rated Jewel! Only 4 cases allocated!

Scott Hawley, winemaker at famed Torrin (many 95-98 point rated wines) is the skipper at the helm of Law Estate in Paso Robles. 80% of the estate is planted to Syrah and Grenache, while the rest of the property consists of Mourvedre, Petit Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Carignane.  This is the SECOND release, and last year they received big scores on their Premiere release, so get on board now before this becomes the next Sine Qua None (that would mean None for you).  Robert Parker already rated all the 2011 wines very high (95& 96 Points!).

Because of the limited allocation I am only offering these wines via a unique “mixed” case purchase.  The “8 BOTTLE CASE” comes with FREE SHIPPING, includes 2 bottles each of Audacious (96 Pts), Beguiling (95 Pts), Intrepid (95 Pts) and Sagacious (95 Pts).

Robert Parker notes:

Audacious 2011 96 Points: “The 2011 Audacious(38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 8% Petit Sirah) reminds me of a Howell Mountain Cabernet with its creme de cassis and purple fruits, lead pencil shavings, caramelized meats and chalky minerality. As with the other 2011s from this estate, it has full-bodied richness and depth, solid mid-palate concentration and building tannin that comes through on the finish. It’s a terrific wine that will have 10-15 years of longevity.”

Beguiling 2011 95 Points: “Also awesome, the Grenache dominated 2011 Beguiling (which incorporates 15% Syrah) is pure, elegant and layered, with drop-dead gorgeous notes of black raspberry, licorice, ground pepper, chalk and creamy licorice. Full-bodied and voluptuously styled, with no hard edges and a downright sexy style, it stays graceful and nicely focused on the finish. Drink this beauty over the coming 5-6 years.”

Interpid 2011 95 Points:” The inky-colored 2011 Intrepid checks in 100% Syrah that spent 22 months in 50% new French oak barrels. It’s another smoking effort from this estate that gives up classy framboise, black licorice, chocolatey oak and toasted spice to go with a full-bodied, layered and thrillingly pure profile on the palate. Top class all the way, it will be better in another year and have upward of a decade of longevity.”

Sagacious 2011 95 Points: “Another brilliant blend, the 2011 Sagacious is 38% Syrah, 34% Mourvedre and 28% Grenache, all of which spent 20 months in 40% new French oak. Black raspberry, cassis, white pepper, leather and crushed flowers all emerge from this beauty, and it stays weightless and elegant on the palate, with fantastic purity and freshness. It’s hard to resist now, but it will evolve gracefully as well.”

French Laundry’s Favorite Chardonnay by Kistler Winemaker

Jason Kesner, winemaker extraordinaire at Kistler created yet another amazing wine. Jason was the longtime vineyard manager at Hudson, when in 2002 he produced 25 cases of his first wine for some of the top restaurants like French Laundry, Gary Danko and ME! The following year he produced a massive 75 cases, and the rest as they say is history. Moreover, Jason has brought Kistler to new heights as well!  The Kesner Chardonnays are on the “Highly Recommended List” at the Laundry for 10 years straight.

The Vineyard: This is the third vintage from this long heralded site.  The same family has been farming the land since the late 1950’s, and they learned what worked and what didn’t a long time ago.  Heritage California clone chardonnay, on St. George rootstock planted in the red sandy soils in the hills west of the river.  It consistently yields a wine that gives a nod to classic Californian chardonnays, but with structure, and lively acids due to us picking a touch on the early side of things

Stunning wine that is bursting with bright fruit.  Gorgeous color and stunning aromatics.  Hints of stone fruit, honey, orange blossom and flowers on the nose. The wine is well-structured, rich and lush with  loaded with great flavors of honey, nectarine, butterscotch and a touch of minerality and whey. A long finish make for a very enjoyable experience. The wine was not fined or filtered and aged in high quality French oak barrels.

David Arthur 2012 Cab Blend ~ 25% off

Meritaggio is the brainchild of the Long Brothers at David Arthur.  Wanting to fulfil his desire of producing a fine Meritage blend, David (Long) set out to find clones of the five classic Bordeaux varietals.  On this travels, he came across Sangiovese, which stole the spotlight from any Malbec he had ever tasted.  Bob (Long) had the brilliance to name the wine “Meritaggio” in honor of the Italian Heritage.  This blend is created from the very best lots at David Arhtur’s Estate.

Stunning 93 Pointer ~ 95 cases produced!

Jim Knight has many passions and wine and music are right at the top of the list. In naming his wine, a Syrah from Santa Ynez Valley, he decided to pay homage to one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time, Jelly Roll Morton. Like Morton’s jazz recordings, no serious wine collection is complete without Jim’s Syrah, but with under 100 cases produced it will only be enjoyed by a few lucky people who do their homework and search out one of the best kept secrets in Santa Barbara.

The 2012 Jelly Roll “Rimrock” is the fourth vintage of this wine from this fantastic cool-climate, coastal vineyard in San Luis Obispo. This wine marks a new beginning for Jelly Roll and this vineyard site will be the future of Jelly Roll Syrah. Jim Knight wanted to focus on making Syrah in the style of wine that he likes to drink, which are from regions, such as Cornas and Saint Joseph, in the Northern Rhone Valley of France. The Rimrock vineyard gives him that style of Syrah. Knight believes that this is the one of the greatest Syrah vineyards in California because of its “Rhone-like” characteristics that it portrays. It is also because of its naturally low-yielding vines (they are lucky to even get 1 ton/acre in some vintages) and the grapes phenolic ripeness that happens at a low sugar level, thus creating a wine with low alcohol- 13.2% alcohol in the 2012 vintage. Only 95 cases produced.

Paul Lato’s Syrah & Grenache ~ 98 Points

Paul Lato has been producing some of the most amazing wines over the past decade and has not gone unnoticed by the press with many 96, 97 and 98 point ratings.  All of Paul’s releases are very small productions, but amazingly well-crafted.  Paul is probably one of the most meticulous winemakers I have ever met.  Attention to detail from start to finish.  He is involved from the first day of the year to harvest into dormancy, pruning, etc. all the way to dropping fruit during the growing season and only picking the very best bunches his vines yield.  He’d rather only produce two barrels of amazing wine versus selling six of “OK” wine.

The average score for any Paul Lato wines are 94.5 Points, not shabby for my Polish (via Canada) sommelier turned winemaker friend.  I don’t know any winemaker that puts more attention to detail as Paul does.  He is so meticulous that he’ll discard a barrel that 99% of the winemakers would consider perfect.  If it is not 110% perfect it is not Paul Lato perfect.  Paul only settles for the best.

This is becoming Paul Lato’s BEST Syrah bottling numerous years in a row.  If one were in the Rhone Valley, it would put many of the big names to shame!  In a recent tasting Paul’s Il Padrino bottling beat out 100 point wines like Alban’s Reva, and others!  I only get 5 cases of this gem, so jump on it NOW, as this might be the year of a 100 Point Syrah from Lato!

Robert Parker (2011)  95 Points : “Harvested in the first week of November, with tiny yields, the 2011 Syrah II Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is flat-out gorgeous. Fermented with 20% stem inclusion and richer and more masculine than the Larner Vineyard, with ripe raspberry, ground pepper, toast, underbrush, roasted meat and big crushed stone-like minerality, it flows onto the palate with a medium to full-bodied, firm and structured feel. Still playing in the house style of highlight elegance and finesse over power and richness, it needs another 1-2 years of bottle age and will have 12-15 years of ultimate longevity. Drink 2015-2026. Paul Lato continues to knock it out of the park and I can’t say enough about the quality coming from this estate. Across the board, the wines show classic, varietal correct profiles that always show finesse and elegance, yet back it up with layers of fruit and texture.”

Paul Lato 2012 Syrah “Cinematique” Santa Maria
Retail 90.00 – GGWC 84.99

USE CODE “PAULLATO12″ during checkout

This is in my book THE best Cinematique to-date bar-none! I believe strongly that is equal, if not better than the great 2007 and 2008 vintages (97 Point rating) and the 2011 (94 Points).  I’d be surprised that this wine will not see very high 90 scores!

Robert Parker (2011)  94 Points:  “An elegant, silky effort that shows the prettier side to variety, the 2011 Syrah Cinematique Larner Vineyard (co-fermented with 7% Viognier) delivers a perfumed, elegant profile with sweet black raspberry, licorice, underbrush, crushed flower and hints of pepper all soaring from the glass. Showing the vintage elegance and weight profile, with medium to full body, it flows onto the palate with a seamless texture, good (not great) mid-palate concentration and fine tannin framing the finish. It should benefit from 1-2 years in the cellar and drink beautifully through 2023. Drink 2014-2023.”

This is the inaugural release of the Paul Lato 2012 Grenache “White Piano” Paderewski Paso Robles and can tell you that this one will turn heads! This is a very sophisticated wine from an amazing vineyard source. A little sidebar – the Paderewski  vineyard was started by Paul Lato’s countryman, Ignacy Jan Paderewski, world famous pianist and former Prime Minister of Poland. This vineyard is very reminiscent to the ones in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

A small winery but a big wine!  The name is a combination of the vineyard owners (a.k.a mom and dad) Nancy KIVELson and Tom AngSTADT.  An all estate property producing some great (mostly) Rhone wines.  Our tasting group does not often tackle Syrahs, so it was time to do it again.  We brought in some great wines and it was a head-to-head race with a 97 point rated wine, but in the end, my little guy beat out the big scoring one!

This 245 case production is a real gem.  You encounter gobs of fruit right out of the starting block. A whiff of anise, black currant and mint jump out of the glass. This full-bodied wine is very well crafted and will impress many!  Tons of intensity, yet very elegant where it has to be.  We decanted this wine 2 hours prior to tasting and that opened up its bouquet even more and the flavors and acidity where nicely in sync with each other.   This little gemstone finishes long and intense just as it started.  Don’t wait too long or it will pass you by!
