The REAL Halloween Wine!

Rancho Carne Humana was a 17,962-acre Mexican land grant in present day Napa County, California given in 1841 by Governor Juan Alvarado to Edward Turner Bale. The name means “human flesh” in Spanish! The original landowner was afraid that the people would squat on his land, so he created tales of the cannibals living there – thus the “Carne Humana” (Human Flesh) story.  The story is “cute” but the wine is very serious.  This second release is not just a fly-by-night wine, it is the real McCoy!

A stunning blend of 40% Petite Verdot, 30% Petite Sirah, 10% Zinfandel, 10% Syrah, 5% Cab Sauvingon and 5% Charbono. This is only the second release, and I can say this might be one of the best “Outside-the-box” blends I have tasted this year! This is a wine that will hands down beat wines like Prisoner, especially in the $ department!  The wine is loaded from nose to finish with bold flavors. Opaque purplish-black color.  Gorgeous fragrant nose of lush red fruit and hints of subtle spiciness jump out of the glass.  On the palate this medium to full bodied “monster” offers up a mixture of rich, smooth, black stone fruit, anise, chocolate, espresso and a touch of nutty spiciness that linger into a long, pleasant silky finish.

Weekly Yelp!

Yelp featured us on their “San Francisco Weekly Yelp” recently! Here’s what they had to say:

Golden Gate Wine Cellars (Ocean & Santa Ana)
“An independently owned boutique shop of hard-to-find wines with personal service to tend to your palate. With $5 Saturday tastings with winemakers, and a series of underground night tastings, you can blame us for uncorking this mystery.”

Three childhood friends (since 6th grade) took different paths after college but somehow were drawn back to their hometown of Sonoma.  Envolve was created to put a longtime dream to rest; start a winery together.  All three have different backgrounds, but they all lead to one common denominator – WINE!

“THE” Chardonnay & Pinot Noir Bargains of the Month

WPA (Wine Projects Administration), a play on the old work projects administration that was part of the new deal in the 1930’s, is the latest venture of one of California’s most acclaimed winemakers.  His wines have garnered big press and accolades with every release.  His young(er) vines show very well, but he is very picky and decided to create an additional label “WPA” to find a good house for this amazing fruit.  He did ask to remain “nameless” as the sources used for WPA are top-notch and he did not want offend the vineyard owners.

Small Napa Cab wins “Big” Blind Tasting

In a recent blind tasting (16 tasters) of 2009 Napa Valley Cabernets and Cabernet Blends, the small Ramian winery beat out a very honorable lineup:

  • Paloma (95 Pts WS)

The winner, RAMIAN, received 10 first place, Coup de Foudre 3 first place, Dunn Howell Mountain 2 first place and Arnot Roberts 1 first place votes.

From the tallest heights of Mt. Veeder, well above the Napa Valley floor, the winemaker handcrafts his story one chapter at a time into a collected work of vintages: a traditional tale told from a new perspective, a moveable feast intended to endure. This classic Bordeaux “style” blend exemplifies its Napa Valley mountain home. All five traditional Bordeaux grapes are used with Cabernet Sauvignon being the majority and dominate varietal. His goal is to create a soft and very rich old-world style Cabernet Sauvignon blend but with ultra-rich Napa Valley fruit flavor. This wine will age for 10-15 years easily.

“Under the Radar” Pinot Noir

Patrick Krutz was the “lone ranger for about four years – CEO, Winemaker, Broom Pusher, Barrel Cleaner, etc. before he received some much needed help from his siblings.   Initially it was just Krutz Cellars, but since the family additions, the word “Family” was added.  They source from some of the most amazing vineyards in Northern California, and it shows in their final products, that “sourcing” and good winemaking make for a cohesive good quality final product.

BEST UNDER $40.00 Napa Cab Blend, Tastes like $80!

Owner Mark Carter (Carter Cellars & The Carter House) and his winemaker Mike Smith hit it off some years ago at the Carter House on “Table 5” – This wind up being the table that Mike also landed the gig at Schrader Cellars when he met Fred Schrader there.  So when they created this fun project it was only fitting that it would be called (lucky) Table 5.

A blend of Merlot (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (45%)and Petit Verdot (5%) sourced from amazing vineyards, like ToKalon, Colliseum & Hossfeld.  The color on this wine is amazing, the nose is stunning and the body is oh-so sexy and sultry (sorry getting carried away, thinking of my wife). All joking aside, a full-bodied, but very elegant wine with beautiful red stone flavors, a touch of chocolate leading into a long, but silky finish.  This $38.00 bottle tastes more like a $80.00 bottle of wine!  Only 300 cases of this amazing wine were produced!

Surprise 100 case production

Campesino reads like a love story.  A young girl Griselda Ceja (from the infamous Ceja winery) spent her childhood days on this property, she falls in love with a local winemaker and they got married on the vineyard site in 2007.  This five acre vineyard is one of the most ideal vineyard sites (for Pinot) in the Valley, getting much needed temperate weather necessary for this varietal.   Located in the Carneros Region of the Napa Valley, the “Papi y Chula” vineyard is the source of this little gem.

The Value Cabernet blend of the Month!

Field Recordings is winemaker Andrew Jones’ personal catalog of the people and places he values most. Having stood in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast, he has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential. As friendships are made and opportunities are embraced, Andrew produces small quantities of soulful wine from these unusual, quiet vineyards.

Field Recordings 2011 “Chorus Effect” is a Paso Robles proprietary red blend. In a quest to create a unique wine, Andrew discovered the synergy of marrying various great sources. Grapes are sourced from some of Paso’s most prestigious vineyards This wine is loaded from start-to-finish with lush, bright fruit. The aromas jump out of the glass – I encountered bright black berry and black currant with a touch of spiciness. On the mid-palate, this lush wine explodes with more of the powerful black stone fruit. The wine has a nice silkiness to it, and a very long last finish. You can keep this puppy for a good 5-10 years! If you want to enjoy it now, decant a good 1-2 hours in advance!
