Paul Hobbs Cabernet at its best!

Before we get to the wine, let’s take a moment to congratulate the San Francisco Giants on their impressive, and what some people would call impossible, World Series victory. (Apologies to my Detroit fans.) No matter who you root for, you have to admit that they made an admirable comeback.

In the same breath, however, we should also send a prayer out for our friends on the east coast as they prepare to ride out hurricane Sandy. They will need your support in the coming weeks. Please consider making a donation to a charity of your choice to help those who may experience loss or injury in the coming days.

Honeysuckle and Bosque Pear are immediate on the nose of the Sangiacomo Chardonnay. The nose also offers hints of white pepper, caramel, lily-perfume with some soapstone minerality. This Chardonnay has good viscosity, which becomes richer in time. More tropical notes of mango and pineapple are present on the palette. The residual Malic acid balances out the viscosity of this weighty wine. Bright with fruit in its youth this wine will develop nicely over the next 7-8 years (2019-2020).

O’Shaughnessy gets 95 Points From Robert Parker

Betty O’Shaughnessy hails from Minnesota, having spent her childhood growing up in a rural farming community. After college she raised a family while building a career in real estate investing and development in Minneapolis. Her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for food and wine fueled the fires that transitioned her from owner/teacher of a cooking school in Minneapolis, to creating a winery in Napa Valley.

Founding winemaker, COO, Sean Capiaux, has deftly established his impressive and notable career over the past 20 years at prominent wineries. Sean then began his career at Jordan and Pine Ridge and landed at Peter Michael before creating his own Capiaux label and landing the winemaking job at O’Shaughnessy.

The 2009 Mt. Veeder is a serious wine with an opaque purple blue color. Perfumed aromas of blueberry pie, blackberry, licorice, crème brulee, smoked meats, iodine and brown sugar jump out of the glass. On the palate dark, dense berry flavors, black cherry syrup intermixed with tar and smoke make for a compelling taste that lingers in the mouth for several minutes. Muscular but with restrained elegance it carries the O’Shaughnessy trademark of balance and power.

Robert Parker 95+Points: ”The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Mt. Veeder is impeccable from start to finish. It shows marvelous detail and completeness in its perfumed red berries, mint, flowers and licorice. Tar, ash and a host of other darker nuances add considerable complexity. This is a marvelous showing. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.”

The 2009 Howell Mountain Cabernet is the first 10th anniversary wine, a represents a special milestone for the winery. The wine has a dark purple color with a solid core. Blackberry, boysenberry, black currant, rum raisin, graphite, and violet aromas are bright and lively. Expressive fruit concentrations on the palate of black cherry, blueberry and crème di cassis are followed by a long complex finish with balanced tannins and good acidity. An extracted wine that is rewarding upon release but will continue to improve with cellaring for another 10 years at least.

Robert Parker 94+ Points: ”The 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is all minerals, graphite and pure Howell Mountain. Layers of dark red fruit come to life in this articulate, pedigreed Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2009 needs another few years in the bottle, but it is already quite striking, especially with some time in the glass. Saline notes frame the long finish. The 2009 is 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Malbec, 5% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, 5% St. Macaire and 2% Cabernet Franc. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029.”

This Zinfandel “Rocks”!

Carol’s career got an early and unusual start at only six years old. Her mom developed an “identify the scent” game using household herbs and spices that was the beginning of Carol’s path into the wine industry. It quickly became apparent that Carol not only had a great sense of smell, but she was remarkably adept at figuring out the new smells as the game evolved. Entering UC Davis with a penchant for poetry, Carol stumbled upon her true calling when she first entered a wine cellar. The wonderful aroma of wine aging in oak barrels was so enticing that it drew Carol to her life’s work, and the rest as they say… is history.

A real “meat-eating” wine for less than $34.00

Carne Humana Vineyard The original landowner was afraid that the people would squat on his land,  so he created tales of the cannibals living there – thus the “Carne Humana” (Human Flesh) story.  The story is “cute” but the wine is very serious.  This inaugural release is not just a fly-by-night wine, it is the real McCoy!  The source of this fruit is the original land ground, just north of Rancho Caymus (a.k.a Caymus vineyards).  The production is tiny and I would not be surprised to see this in the Top 100 later in the year!
