New Winds Blow over venerable Stag’s Leap Winery

Mike Smith (Carter, Bench, Miriad, Scarlett, etc) and Jim Barbour (Viticulturist extraordinaire) took over the the day-to-day vineyard and winemaking duties at the venerable Stetlzner Winery and it really shows! The vineyard was established in 1964 and has been owned and run by the same (Steltzner) family, but it was not until 2011 when these two first string quarterbacks came on board and made Steltzner 2.0, rise again. It is somewhat the ugly duckling story of sorts, with an amazing ending!

Really, this is some of the very best vineyard land in Napa, but it took the guts of second generation owner Allison Stetzner and her husband Sam to  revitalize this sleepy giant.  The best viticultural practices have been implemented, and with winemaker Mike Smith at the helm (with his assistant Bob Pepi) this winery will finally see the light at the end of the wine tunnel and able to play with the big boys of Napa!

This (re-inaugural) 2014 release will really wow you!  A few weeks ago, I took 30 clients to the vineyard and they were really stunned by the quality of the property and the wine!

Deep dark color with inviting aromas of violet and black stone fruits. Classic Stags Leap District structure, silky suede tannins and a long finish. Dark cherry, blackberry with crushed slate in the mid palate. Beautiful notes of chocolate, black fruit and a hint of spicy notes on the finish. This 100% Cabernet is a blend from two distinct blocks on the 30-acre Steltzner’s Stags Leap District Estate – Pool block and Block 3.66 to the south.
