Argot’s 94 Point “Exuberant & Impressive” Release

Those of you who purchased the  “Bastard Tongue” from Argot should jump on this opportunity – Justin Harmon’s Estate Pinot Noir is even more limited, but any bit as good.  He produced 125 cases (5 barrels) of this stunning Pinot Noir from his still young estate.  This is really a winery that you’ll have to watch for years to come – I promise!

And for those of you attending our New York Tasting on June 17  - Justin Harmon will be there with his entire portfolio!

The 2014 Estate Pinot is just plain fun to drink. Galloping out of the gates, this wine pulls no punches, grabbing the lapels, and sitting you up straight in your chair. A bushelful of decadently-ripe, red and black berry fruits intermingle with black tea, unroasted coffee bean and pine forest. The significant textures of our mountain vineyard envelop the tongue and deliver a long lingering finish. This is a thrill-a-sip wine-drinking experience.

Robert Parker 94 Points: “Both Pinot Noirs from the estate on Sonoma Mountain are impressive, but production is relatively limited, with 125 cases of the Sonoma Mountain and 775 cases of the Bastard Tongue. The 2014 Pinot Noir Estate from Sonoma Mountain is made largely from California Heritage selections, in addition to Wadenswil. It was 100% destemmed and aged 22 months in 100% new French oak. This is a sexy, complex Pinot Noir with notes of forest floor, spring flowers, blackcurrant and black cherry. The wine is deep, medium to full-bodied, youthful and exuberant. This is impressive, and no doubt destined to fly under the radar, given the small production and the fact that this estate is not terribly well known.”

Winemaker Notes: “As dark and masculine as ever, in 2013 the vintage also brought a surprising elegance to the wine we had yet to experience from this bottling. While the 2012 came out of the gates brooding and bit backwards, the 2013 is immediately charming and approachable with all the classic hallmarks of Syrah dominating the wine — dark, brambly fruits, scorched earth, fresh-cracked pepper and asphalt. The terroir of our mountain vineyard remains on display with white flowers, menthol and lavender creating beautiful complexities and brightness to the bouquet and palate.

As with all of our Syrahs, this wine began its life with a depth and ferocity that foretold greatness if given the proper patience. Employing many of the lessons we have learned across vintages, in addition to bringing larger format puncheons into our Syrah barrel program, what arrives in bottle is a beautifully polished wine built for drinking today, or a long, rewarding life in the cellar.”

Robert Parker 94 Points: “Certainly the 2013 Syrah Estate, which is more expensive, is another animal all together. This spent 33 months in 100% French puncheons and barriques and is a flavorful wine with a dense purple color, a kiss of steak tartar, white flowers, blackberry and olive. Dense and full-bodied, it hides its oak aging well and has a nice multilayered mouthfeel and finish. Drink over the next decade.”

We still have small amounts of the 96 Point Bastard Tongue remaining.
