Sexy Napa $50’s Cabernet

What began as a passion for collecting wine and farming has turned into a spectacular Napa Cab. In 1983 Spencer Hoopes planted his ten-acre vineyard in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. With the remarkable terroir, a little bit of luck and a lot of love, he soon became the source for some of the better wineries in the valley. Fifteen years later, he decided to take some of those grapes off the market and put them into bottles with his own name on the label.

Hoopes wines are classic cabs that capture the pure relationship between grape-grower and winemaker with an old-world-meets-new-world style profile. The philosophy is simple: minimize after-harvest manipulation of the grape so that you can enjoy the most important ingredient in its true form. This is true grower-made wine.

The 2013 Cabernet is a blend of 4 vineyard parcels on the Hoopes Estate. On the nose it presents with sweet and floral elements. It reminds me of raspberry violet candies, sweet cherries, and a touch of chocolate. On the mouthfeel, the wine is lush and generous, with a hint of black currants, chocolate, vanilla sweetness and a full, but supple, texture. Its finish is focused and lengthy with an acidity that creates an integrated but silky finish.

WS 93 Points: “This full-bodied, velvet-textured wine has an exotic aroma like a pine forest and tastes like a bowl full of blueberries. Ripe, almost jammy flavors coat the tongue, and vibrate with black currant on the finish. Fine-grained tannins give the texture lots of grip, and support the ripe fruit flavors so they stay dry and appetizing sip after sip.”

Winemaker Notes: “On the nose it presents with sweet and floral elements followed by raspberry violet candies, sweet cherries, and delicate rosewater. On the mouthfeel, the wine is lush and generous, with a hint of sweetness and a full, but supple, texture. Its finish is focused and lengthy with an acidity that creates an integrated finish.”
