Chardonnay of the Month

Silverpoint is a precise and meticulous method of drawing that reached its peak during the Renaissance. Pre-dating the use of graphite, silverpoint was used by old masters such as Albrecht Durer, Leonardo da Vinci and Rembrandt. These and other Renaissance artists used silverpoint for underdrawings of their paintings and for separate studies on paper. Using silverpoint, tonal differences are built up very slowly. The characteristics of silverpoint include subtlety of tone, delicacy of line and a sensuous surface. The silverpoint drawing technique captures the essence of the wines we want to produce.  That said, the emphasis on this wine is elegance, flavor and perfection.

Legendary Vineyard Cabernet by 100 point winemaker

Henry Pellet was one of the “engineers” of the Napa Valley. Planting one of the first vineyards in the 1850’s  He was hired in 1959 to make wine from his grapes by John Patchett, one year after Charles Krug started, becoming the second commercial winemaker in Napa!  The vineyard is situated next to the famous Dr. Crane and To-Kalon.  The label depicts the dawn of the age of electrification, the era when pioneer winemaker Henry Alphonse Pellet illuminated the path towards modern winemaking methodology and with it, high quality and age-worthy wines. This vineyard site has been producing grapes for over 150 years, essentially since the beginning of winemaking in Napa Valley.

French Laundry’s Top Chardonnay

Jason Kesner, winemaker extraordinaire at Kistler created yet another amazing wine. Jason was the longtime vineyard manager at Hudson, when in 2002 he produced 25 cases of his first wine for some of the top restaurants like French Laundry, Gary Danko and ME! The following year he produced a massive 75 cases, and the rest as they say is history. Moreover, Jason has brought Kistler to new heights as well, where he has been in charge of winemaking since 2012.  The Kesner Chardonnays are on the “Highly Recommended List” at the French Laundry for over 10 years straight.

From the sand driven soils of western Sonoma, deposited by the Pacific tens of thousands of years ago. Sourced from the Heintz Vineyard along the ridge of sandy hilltops just eest of Occidental, where the same family has been on the land since 1912. White flowers, flint, notes of golden stone fruit and a defining sense of minerallity, with a hint of whey. The wine is laced with a vibrant acidity and a liquid stone like earthen chord. This wine is taller than it is broad. Well structured, and has an elegant nature to it, but not without concentration.  This is by far one of the best ever Kesner Chardonnays at a fraction the cost of Kistler

Also check out their stunning KESNER 2013 PINOT NOIR “KING’S” RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY

The second vintage Kesner made wine from this vineyard, a small patch of Pinot Noir in the midst of a sea of Chardonnay plantings on the lifted ancient sandy plains wanderings of the Russian River. An elegant bottling, that displays the delicate side of the varietal, and as this site is teaching me, that’s the highest meaning for this fruit. Redder, and more nuanced in its tones, lovely and pure. Decidedly not tannic, the structure comes from vibrant, sanguine natural acids. Lightly crushed rose petals, bright and lively deep red fleshed fruits, tones redolent of graphite shavings, and a slight dustiness on the nose giving hints of evolving to more forest floor like notes. A poised, high seated, yet well-structured wine that settles to rest mid palette .

MUST HAVE 252 case Napa Cab , 94 Points

Situated mid-slope on Diamond Mountain, this 2.3 acre vineyard is a real gem-in-the-rough.  At more than ½ the price of its esteemed neighbor “Diamond Creek”, this wine will blow your mind and not your wallet.  In a recent “Mountain Cabernet” tasting, Dyer stood its own against some big-boys (and girls).Remember, only 252 cases of this 2012 Cabernet (76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19 Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot) were produced! The 2012 Dyer received 94 Points Anthony Galloni!

The 2012 showcases an amazing color and aroma!  Intense aromas of huckleberry and cassis with a touch of cocoa dust and a whiff of spice jump out of the glass.  On the palate, this harmoniously made 2012 Cabernet is lush and full in body and shows an amazing balance of great fruit and acid.  Coated with powerful layers of black stone fruit, chocolate, spice and a touch of toasty vanilla.  This full-bodied wine finishes with silky and supple tannins.  This is a wine that will drink and cellar well for 15+ years!

Anthony Galloni 94 Points: “The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the more fascinating, nuanced wine of the vintage. Graphite, herbs, tobacco, cedar and incense are some of the many notes that add dimension in a firm, dark Cabernet Sauvignon full of complexity. The firm tannins need time to soften, but there is a lot to look forward to. Hints of iron, cedar and red stone fruits linger on the close.”

3 & 4 Barrel Sensation

Camino Winery is a project from Tadeo Borchardt who has followed a circuitous road (a “camino”) towards pursuing his love of wine. For the past decade, as winemaker at Neyers Vineyards, he has been making wines of distinction and wide acclaim. Now for the first time ever, he is releasing his own personal label, beginning with two wines sourced from vineyards and grape growers whom he has the highest degree of respect.  He just released 2 amazing new wines, a 75 case production Chardonnay and also produced 100 cases of an amazing Cabernet.

The grapes from this great vineyard were hand harvested before sunrise under lights to ensure they arrive to the winery cold and in perfect condition. Immediately pressed, the juice fermented naturally in the finest French oak barrels without the addition of any laboratory agents.

Very perfumed aromas of Meyer lemon, fresh tarragon, and creamy meringue leap out of the glass. The flavors are generous with Pixie tangerine, fresh cream, sea salt caramel, honey, and stony, mineral notes. The clean acidity keeps all the flavors precise, giving the finish a lot of snap and verve. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered after 15 months of barrel aging. Only 70 cases produced!

This rocky and rugged site produced an exceptional wine in 2012. These 50-year old, dry-farmed vines set small, flavorful berries hanging from few, loose clusters. The carved terraces, high up the face of the Mayacamas, allow many exposures for the clusters, increasing complexity in the wine.

Expressive aromas of incense, violets, and crushed blackberries on the nose. Dense and packed, the ripe and fine mountain tannins provide a beautiful frame for the flavors of white pepper, cassis, and more freshly crushed blackberries. There’s a perfumed, floral lift throughout. The finish is long with a savory, mineral note persisting.

Astounding Summer Wine

When your uncle is Chuck Wagner (Caymus), you are expected to make wine – period. Derek and his brother Kurt Beitler did just that. They each created their own wineries and are making the wine at the Caymus facility. Both have day jobs managing the Caymus (and other) vineyards.  Bodega Rancho produces two Syrahs and one Viognier.

Napa’s Best Cab Blend of the month!

Trespass is a small 5 acre all estate property in northwestern St. Helena at the base of Spring Mountain. The wines are hand-crafted by Kirk Venge who has been making wine since he was a little child under the tutelage of his dad Nils Vegne (the first 100 point winemaker in the US with his 1985 Groth Reserve Cabernet).  Kirk has wowed us with many great wines (Beau Vigne, Macauley, Honeycutt, Igneous, Venge, etc). Nils told me that at pre-school age Kirk knew he was going to be winemaker.

The Trespass Intrigue is a fine Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon married with 35% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc from their Estate property.  This wine is known for its devout approachability.  Already drinking nicely, it starts with a generous wafting of raspberry covered with a smooth milk chocolate and finishing with a creamy vanilla.  This generous wine produces full flavors of kirsch, currant, plum, black cherry and a touch of cedary tannin for spice.  The Merlot possesses the velvety charm to tame the strength and more powerful ego of the Cabernet. Only 150 cases were produced.

10th Anniversary Tasting

On June 19th we celebrated Golden Gate Wine Cellars’ 10th Anniversary.  For this occasion, we celebrated with a big Tasting Bash at the venerable New York City Fire Museum, greeting 300 of our clients, some from as far away as Japan, Canada, Tennessee, California, Washington, and others closer, Connecticut, New Hampshire and the NY surrounding area.
We poured 80 new releases with the help of 37 winery owners, winemakers, and winery representatives who all flew in from California..  A special thanks to Donal O’Dwyer who flew all the way from “down-under” to pour at my event.
The lineup of wineries was amazing and the quality of the wines top notch.
While not one wine disappointed, many did show amazingly well.  All wines are still available for sale (while supplies last)
The Top 10 wines were:
I also wanted to say thank you to Bruno’s On The Boulevard (www.brunosontheblvd.com) for catering our event, which went without a hitch.  Also to Riedel Glassware for assisting me with the great quality wine glasses I was able to rent and to Murray’s Cheese  (www.murrayscheese.com).
I cannot forget the most important person, my wife Crystal, to whom I owe a big thank you and a lot more for supporting me in my endeavor and for all the assistance and love over all these years.
A humbled,
