Sexy Chardonnay in the low 30’s ($ not F)

This expressive wine perfectly personifies the classic style of chardonnay that the cool-climate Russian River Valley is known for. Fruit from several of Ten Acre’s single vineyard sources was combined to create this well balanced take on the classic Burgundian varietal. The Russian River Valley is famous for the coastal morning fog that slowly burns off throughout the day, lengthening the hang time of chardonnay fruit during the ripening season.

Scarecrow Winemaker’s latest concoction stuns!

The Kelly Fleming Estate is located next door to Napa collectible Araujo on Pickett Road in Calistoga. The estate might be 300 acres, but only 12 acres are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, while the other 288 acres are its own natural wildlife preserve.  Planted in 2002, this winery is slowly but surely turning into a “who is who” in Napa.  Add “star” winemaker Celia Welch, and the key to success is there!  Only a few hundred cases each of Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc are produced each year, so my advice – jump on it now!  Kelly is married to famed restaurateur Paul Fleming, creator of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse restaurants.

Gorgeous color and vibrant aromas jump out the glass.  You are greeted by Bing cherries, black berries, sweet mint and black licorice that intertwine seamlessly with aromas of toasted nuts and cinnamon spice. The full-bodied palate of this 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon shows a juicy core of black and red stone fruit perfumed by the distinct savory terroir and floral notes that characterize the Kelly Fleming Estate.  The bright, juicy nature of this wine is balanced by soft, velvety tannins that both coat the palate and support the minerally, refined finish.

Lovely bright pineapple, gentle fresh Asian pears, and a hint of white peach, along with touches of jasmine, lemongrass and kaffir lime leaf all demonstrate the integration between fruit and floral notes. On the palate, the bright, juicy pineapple and floral notes are presented in a crisp flavor profile. Vibrant, fresh and lively flavors linger through the soft, dry finish.

TWO barrel only Mark Herold stunner

Mark Herold has been on fire as of late.  Great reviews on Kobalt, Kamen and his own Mark Herold labels.  It does not matter what Mark touches, it turns into a must-have-wine.  The same for this 50 case Grenache production!

This is a very well-structured wine!  Full in body, masculine and powerful yet elegant!  Mark Herold is not missing a beat these days and this 2011 (100%) Grenache is a real crowd pleaser.  On the nose black and red raspberries, pepper and a touch of underbrush and spice.  Medium to full in body this lush wine is gorgeously textured and has an amazing mouthfeel with layers of bright fruit, hint of cassis and white pepper.  The wine is elegant with a long, pleasant finish.  With only 50 cases produced, this will be gone in no time!

Saxum Winemaker Does it Again

The 2011 Epoch Red Blend sees a change in vineyard makeup, but not in quality!  The “Estate” Red wine is a blend of two vineyards (54 % Paderewski & 46% Catapult).  The wine is a blend of 38% Syrah, 24% Grenache, 21% Mourvedre, 10% Tempranillo  & 7% Counoise.   Winemaker of year (2010) Justin Smith (Saxum) who received some 100 point ratings, knocked this one out of the park!  The 2011 Red Blend offers great value for its quality!

Tons of intensity on impact.  Gobs of bright, ripe fruit greet you on the nose.  The palate is coated with lush plum, chocolate, black stone fruits.  Lush and full in body, this wine will please connoisseurs and beginners alike!  I call this a new-worldish red that will show the French that we are for real!  Very vibrant from start to finish, this wine will go well a rack of lamb, hearty stew and of course great cheese plate.  Limited production.

Robert Parker 92 Points: ”Looking at the 2011s from bottle, and always a rock-solid bottle of wine and a great entry into the style here, the 2011 Estate Blend offers up plenty of ripe plum, licorice, crushed flowers and violet-like nuances as well as a medium to full-bodied, balanced profile in the mouth. Showing the cooler vintage with its overall freshness and focus, it’s beautifully done and should drink nicely for 3-5 years, Drink now-2018.“

Amazing 93+ rated Chardonnay

Walter Hansel has become synonymous with great quality at a great price!  Year after year these wines seem to impress me and my clientele alike.  The first vines were planted in 1978 just a up the block from Kistler!  The actual winery did not start till 1996 when they produced 3 barrels of Pinot Noir and 10 barrels of Chardonnay, and the rest as they say, is history!  Stephen Hansel (Walter’s son) had one of the best winemakers as his tutor (Tom Rochiolli) so it is no surprise that they are still putting out great wines decades later!

The 2011 is loaded with lively fruit.  On the nose you’ll encounter gobs of apricots and bright passion fruit. Lush from start to finish and well-balanced with layers of fruit and acidity intertwined and gorgeous into a nice finish.  This might be the best finessed wine Hansel has produced to date!

100 Point winemaker’s new Cab

NOW with Denis Malbec (Kapcsandy, Chateau Latour, Haut-Brion, etc.) as your winemaker you can only expect one thing – AMAZING wine!   The 2010 Cabernet is 100% sourced from the Sodaro’s estate vineyard in Coombsville.  For now, this winery might still be an unknown (remember, many were unknowns before I introduced them to you).  I can tell you that this winery will garner big press shortly, and you’ll be happy that I introduced it to you!

Thomas Rivers Brown’s top notch Pinot Noir

When you have two of the best winemakers (Thomas Rivers Brown winemaker at Schrader, Outpost, Maybach, Pulido Walker, Rivers Marie, Casa Piena, etc and Frederic Delivert winemaker at Clark Claudon, Martin Estate, etc.) at the helm one can only expect the best of the best.  These guys have really turned this winery around.  Tamber Bey was always a good winery, but these two ace winemakers are now now turning into a great winery.  So it was no surprise that the 2012 Sun Chase Pinot Noir will wind up with some big score in a few months – then it will be too late to acquire this new found gem.

On the nose you are greeted by gorgeous aromas of dark cherries, plums and spices.  The wine is amazing complex and vibrant.  Harmonious throughout, this youngster will please both the beginner and connoisseur. Layered aromatics and flavors wow you from start to finish.  Lush, bright Bing Cherries, hints of Asian spices, a whiff of orange zest and modest minerality are found on the mid-palate.  Very generous mouth feel and amazing silky texture palate that is loaded with red and black plums and cherries, a touch of pomegranate and just the right amount acidity.  This layered wine finishes with a long perfumed finish.

The Best under the Radar Cab in Napa!

The inaugural release was the 2007 vintage and as of today this winery still floats under the radar, which is great for you and me!  Only 2 barrels (50 cases) of this amazing gem are produced.  This is exactly why I wake up early every day to find gems like this.  You will not be disappointed.  I put this wine in the range of the big names at a fraction the price! This is the fourth vintage, and it already created a following among my clients and you will not find it in the big box and discount stores!

This magnificent wine has an amazing entry of juicy, bright fruit.  On the palate this well-structured wine is extremely balanced and polished.  Tons of silky black stone fruit, black chocolate jump out of the glass on the nose and resonates through the full-bodied black fruit driven mid-palate into a long finish where we encountered a touch of earthiness and bright anise that were nicely synced.   The finish was long and intense with modest tannins. This is a wine that will give some Cabernets a run for its money and will pair well with some bold foods! A MUST HAVE!
