Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a family holiday full of love, sharing and giving thanks. So take some time away from your work, responsibilities and everyday life for a moment. Thanksgiving comes only once each year.

We have a lot to be thankful for as well. We’re especially thankful for you, our loyal customers. You are the ones who make it possible for this industry to exist. Without you, none of the wonderful wines that we all enjoy together would be crafted at all. It makes us want to work even harder so that the New Year can be filled with more discovery, enjoyment, and zest for life!

And this year we have extra cause to be thankful with Hannukah coming a little earlier. Celebrate and give thanks for both the miracles of the past and the miracles of today.

So, here’s to you and yours. Carve the turkey and sing “S’vivon Sov Sov Sov!” Thank you for everything, and may your holiday be filled with gratitude and the love of your family and friends!

Crowd pleasing under 40.00 Napa Cab Blend

Petit Batard is the illegitimate offspring of the Xtant Cabernet.  A small production winery in the Napa Valley.  Jeff Gaffner (Hestan, Saxon Brown) has been making the wines for some years now and the “Dollar Cost Average” formula is always applied here.  I would call this a “Great wine for your Buck!”  The owners are third generation winery owners and winemakers so expertise is key here.

On the nose you are greeted by gorgeous aromas of black currant, anise and chocolate.  This medium to full bodied Proprietary Red blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot and 1% Malbec taste a lot more expensive than its price tag!  The wine is rich body and juicy in flavor, with the right balance of fruit and acid on the mid-palate.  The wine is supple and silky and easy to drink now with a good 10 years of cellar potential left.

Pisoni’s incredible UNDER $40.00 PINOT

Fort Ross is the western most vineyard in Californias’ Sonoma Coast appellation.  This all-estate grown property has been on fire ever since Ace Winemaker Jeff Pisoni took over the winemaking reins in 2008.  The vines are now 15+ years old, so the maturity is paying of dividend for this great property.

The 2009 Fort Ross “FRV” Pinot Noir is a combination of Dijon Clones 115 & 777 with Pommard, Swan & Calera, so a nice mix of esteemed clonal selections.  The wine offers a near opaque image.  It is concentrated (Pommard clone does this) with generous aromas of black currants and boysenberry and a whiff of barnyard on the nose. The wine is rich and full in body with opulent layers of black stone fruit that are keenly balanced by savory notes and a touch of minerality and acidity that continue to evolve through the long lingering finish. This gorgeous wine might be one of the best under $40.00 Pinot Noirs I tasted this year.

Burgundy in California!

Hyde Vineyard is synonymous with some of the most sought after fruit in California.  Every great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer begs them for it year after year.  If this vineyard would be in France it would carry the tag “Premiere Cru” for sure!  I am very excited to offer the Premiere Release of their Chardonnay, while this is the third Pinot Noir release.

The Premiere Release of the Hyde Chardonnay is immediately one of the ages!  The aromatics are amazing, they explode right out of the glass – white peaches, apricots, orange blossom and honeysuckle are nicely intertwined.  The wine is full, yet elegant in body.  Tons of flavors and the right touch of acidity make for a perfect wine.  Very impressive for a youngster, offering up a slight oily mid-palate that leads into a long-lasting finish that does not seem to end.

2011 was the year of the winemaker, and I can tell you that our friends at Hyde managed to produce an amazing wine considering that the cliamte was not on their side.  The wine has great aromatics and texture.  A gorgeous perfumed nose with hints of lavender, flowers and red cherries jumping out of the glass.  The wine is full in body, with good structure and balance.  On the nicely structured palate you’ll encounter red fruit with hints of licorice and a touch of minerality.  The finish is long with silky tannins.

The Champagne Gonet-Medeville 1er Cru Cuvee Tradition – Champagne Gonet-Médeville is a small house founded by Julie Médeville, renowned winemaker at Château Gilette, and her husband Xavier Gonet, a young Champenois oenologist.  Xavier comes from an old family of Champagne vignerons from Mesnil sur Oger. In 2000 they began to receive their share of vines from the family and created their own label: Champagne Gonet-Médeville.  The Cuvee Tradition 1er Cru: a blend of 60% Chardonnay from Bisseuil and Oger, 30% Pinot Noir from Bisseuil and 10% Pinot Meunier from Mareuil sur Ay, all 1er Cru sources

Caraccioli Brut Cuvee – An awesome sparkling wine, the Caraccioli  Brut Cuvee is composed of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir and offers a smooth yeasty nose and fruity aroma and bouquet of pears and apricots.  The wine is rich and fleshy with toasty notes and a touch of minerality.  Well-balanced sparkling that is complex, yet elegant and sophisticated.

Monthuys Champagne NV Brut, Champagne France -  This small Champagne house floats below the radar of the publications, and I love it! The quality of this bottling surpasses many big names. This NV Brut is a blend of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes sourced from the best vineyards in Champagne.  Gorgeous pale yellow Champagne color with a nose of bright apples, peaches and pears jumping out of the glass.  Well balanced, clean, crisp fruit that dances over the palate.  This is a wine that is suited for any occasion; aperitif or serve is with Oysters on-the-half shell, smoked salmon or shrimp cocktail.

New DuMOL Designated Vineyard Releases!

Time flies, as this is the 16th release of DuMOL.  I remember meeting Kerry Murphy and tasting through the first bottles of what has now turned into a real success story.  The “Designated” bottlings  are always something special, and this year is no difference.  Andy Smith pulled up his sleeves and put together an amazing selection of limited production wines.  You can mix and match the wines for FREE SHIPPING (six bottle minimum).

The 2011 Clare showcases a  brilliant pale straw color. The nose offers great aromatic purity of lemon, mineral, sea spray, green apple, mint freshness that opens to poached pear and toasted almond. A very intense stone fruit palate, oatmeal richness and nutmeg. Density builds in the glass, intense salty acidity and nice waxy/oily finish.  Very limited.

Robert Parker 94 points:DuMOl’s 2011 Chardonnay Clare “Hyde Vineyard” is a classic expression of Carneros. Warm, rich and resonant (for the year) the 2011 saturates the palate with the essence of orange peel, mint, spices and a hint of French oak. The 2011 is laced with endless intensity of flavor and great overall balance.”

DuMOL 2011 “Chloe” Chardonnay

The 2011 Chloe offers a brilliant pale yellow gold color. The wine is richly aromatic, with nectarine, orange marmalade, mango, and a subtle edge of fragrant lilies. On the palate the wine is broad with intense fruit richness, white peach, citrus oil, toasted nuts, almond paste, brioche. Real sense of thrusting power, but perfect balance between pulsating fruit and precise acidity. Lemon zest finish.

Robert Parker 93 points: “A big, broad-shouldered wine, the 2011 Chardonnay Chloe Ritchie Vineyard stands out for its pure structure, volume and richness, all buttressed by beams of acidity. The 2011 is all about balance and richness, but without excess heaviness. This is going to be another fascinating wine to follow.”

DuMOL 2011 “Estate” Pinot Noir
Retail 105.00 – GGWC 94.99 (Max 6 bottles)
95 Points Parker

This is the fifth “Estate” release. So an anniversary of sorts that offers a brilliant deep rose color. The nose shows penetrating floral, fruit and seasoned aroma.  On the palate you’ll encounter black cherry and raspberry, fresh herbs, fragrant flowers, toffee and cocoa powder. Great vineyard purity with tightly entwined aromas and flavors. Dark fruits, earth, fresher blueberry, orange zest, a hint of black olive. Structured back end with lifting acidity and youthful tannins.

Robert Parker 95 points: “The flagship 2011 Pinot Noir Estate DuMOL Estate is all about balance and harmony. Nothing in particular stands out, just the wine’s stunning balance and proportion. Deep, rich and voluptuous yet backed up by serious tannins, the 2011 is an infant today. It will be great fun to see where this goes. Today, the Dumol Estate is pure sexiness in the glass! Amazingly, these vines are just seven years old.”

DuMOL 2011 “Ryan” Pinot Noir
Retail 100.00 – GGWC 89.99 (Max 12 bottles)
Robert Parker 92 Points
Use Code DUMOL11DES upon check out

Ryan is becoming the flag ship of DuMOL’s designated series. The 2011 vintage offers up a deep rose color, quite dark & brilliant.  The wine shows of complex floral and seasoned aromas of juniper, bay leaf, anise then wild berry sweetness, kirsch, sassafras and tobacco. The wine offers great power and dimension to the palate. It is rich, but never soft – a lean dynamic power. Boysenberry, maple, cocoa then mint and game. Fine tannin-acid balancing act. Fresh orange zest on the finish.

Robert Parker 92 Points: “The 2011 Pinot Noir Ryan Widdoes Vineyard stands out for its deep, implosive personality. Juicy dark cherries, incense, hard candy and spices all flesh out in this large-scaled, voluptuous Pinot. This is a surprisingly structured powerful wine with a seemingly bright, bright future. Today, the smokiness from the medium-toast Remond barrels is a bit noticeable, but if that element subsides over time, I expect the 2011 Ryan will come at the high end of my rating. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2023.”

DuMOL 2011 “Aidan” Pinot Noir
Retail 100.00 – GGWC 89.99  (Max 2 bottles)
93 Points Parker
Use Code DUMOL11DES upon check out

The 2011 Aidan offers a medium dark ruby red color. The wine offers a bright, vibrant and high-toned aroma with great energy. Rainier cherry, fresh raspberry, pine needle, fragrant roses, a touch of iron. Classic coastal palate with explosive fruits: fresh raspberry coulis, huckleberry, bing cherry. Full-bodied, rich and satisfying, but always bright and juicy. Dusty cocoa powder, tobacco finish.

Robert Parker 93 Points: “The 2011 Pinot Noir Aidan Wildrose Vineyard is one of the deeper, richer wines in the range. Juicy dark cherries, plums, sweet spices, licorice and mint all meld together in an expressive, seamless wine endowed with gorgeous purity and depth. Round, sweet and caressing – especially within the context of the year – the 2011 is showing beautifully today. The use of 25% whole clusters is imperceptible; such is the wine’s balance. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025”.

DuMOL 2011 “Eddie’s Patch” Syrah
Retail 100.00 – GGWC 89.99  (Max 4 bottles)

The big boy “Eddie’s Patch” Syrah has a saturated purple color of dense and concentrated ripe dark fruits.  Out of the glass gobs of blackberry and cassis with menthol, tapenade, mineral and iron tones greet you with pleasure. The wine maintains a floral elegance and lifted aromatic character.  It has a bright red fruit entry, lighter than the nose suggests, then dark fruit compote but not heavy or too forward, truffle notes, pepper, thyme and sage. Rich tannins round out the finish and aromatic graphite notes linger. Always decant this big boy before serving, and let it breathe for an hour or two!

Stunning Cab Franc from Napa under $40.00

John Skupny gained tons of experience at wineries around the world before landing the National Sales Manager position at Francis Ford Copolla’s Rubicon winery.  It was during that time his love for Cabernet Franc came more to the forefront and eventually came to fruition when he located an amazing vineyard on ideal rocky soils on a beautiful hillside slope in the southeastern corner of Napa Valley. The new world climate combined with this old world Loire Clone “214” provides the basis for a unique and immensely gratifying presentation of the Cabernet Franc grape. Lang & Reed ‘Two-Fourteen’ expresses the highest achievement in creating a wine made exclusively from Cabernet Franc that represents the only known bottling of this unique clone in California to date.
