MARK HEROLD WINES

Mark HeroldMark Herold’s fascination with wine started in his childhood home in Panama City. On his twelfth birthday he liberated a bottle of Port from his father’s cellar. Undeterred from the horrendous hangover that followed the next morning, he set about to learn as much as he could about wine. After completing his academic career at the University of Davis with a Ph.D. in Ecology with an emphasis in nutritional biochemistry, he started his first foray into the wine world at Joseph Phelps Vineyards as the Research Enologist. Here Mark was able to bridge the scientific method with winemaking to determine the best approach to making the best expression of wine quality and seamless oak integration.  Merus was a labor of love that Mark started in 1998—a Cult Cabernet Sauvignon that he made in his garage in downtown Napa. His first vintage was extremely challenging weather wise as well as having limited access to equipment. Aside from all the challenges the 1998 Merus still received 93 points from Robert Parker. Most wineries received 86s for the 98 vintage!  Mark started his consulting business soon after with a client list that has included Hestan, Kamen, Harris, Buccella, Kobalt, Celani Family Vineyards, Maze and The Vineyardist.

Paul Hobbs’ 96 Point Chardonnay stunner!

Paul Hobbs does not need an intro, he is the Maestro.  He belongs in the “Hall of Fame” we all know this. The Ritchie Vineyard is a “Grand-Cru” worthy property, planted to older vine Chardonnay, that is every winemakers dream. David and Karen Dunphy, the owners of Black Cordon also own a stunning Cabernet vineyard in the Napa Valley.  This Chardonnay might be one of those that puts wines like Peter Michael, Pahlmeyer, Kongsgaard, etc. to shame.

It is clear that the pedigree of the Ritchie Vineyard, Block L grapes produce a Chardonnay that is quite simply in a category all it’s own. This is a very sexy and sophisticated white wine starting with the seductive, shimmering, light green – gold color that has a fresh, cool, infinitely deep look about it. The nose is delicate and shy yet intensely focused. The initial mouthwatering aroma of vibrant citrus wrapped in toasty oak merges with a lingering, complex, layered flaky crust, tart Apricot pastry. Accent nuances of just squeezed lemon peel, tangerine, and floral notes of Lemon blossom with just a whisper of Jasmine flirt for attention. The enveloping, cool, ethereal smell of damp stones and honeydew melon is reminiscent of the fresh air of a typical Napa Valley summer evening. The complex flavors present themselves in layers that are delicately balanced like thin see through sheets each on top of one another. Citrus, lemon curd, pear, melon and apricot flavors are escorted across the palate between folds of fresh acidity and toasty oak. These layers of nuance appear with laser beam focus, never wandering.  It’s a paradox that such a delicate, refined mouthfeel can at the same time possess a viscous and unctuous silkiness. Always clean and always fresh this wine somehow manages to deliver a creamy richness. For a long while after swallowing the balanced flavors drift by, eventually exiting with the slightest hint of toasted marshmallows in the far finish. Only 300 cases produced!

Not all of the Howell Mountain wines are super tannic, and need 10 years in the cellar to drink well. The 2009 Moffett is a stunning, well-crafted, gorgeous, nicely balanced mountain-grown youngster. Beautiful deep dark color and rich, black stone fruit aromas jump out of the glass. This 2009 is dense, rich, powerful and extracted with stunning layers of black currant, black cherry and blackberry fruits with a touch of chocolate, espresso and a whiff of toasty vanilla. Full in bodied, but well balanced, with a stunning finish that offers up touches of raspberry mixed into the deep core of fruit that allows for an impressive long juicy finish with a silky lining.

World Class Chardonnay from a Grand Cru Vineyard!

Fama Wines

Heather Munden produced one of the most amazing Chardonnays I have ever tasted from the Hudson Vineyard in Carneros. This vineyard has gained “Grand-Cru” status among the wine critics, elite wineries and wine lovers alike. This is one of the best sources for Chardonnay in California, and I would say in the world!

“Fama” = Italian for FAME — “Hudson” = Californian/Carneros for OUTSTANDING Chardonnay —– Combine the two and you have a FAMEOU(S)TANDING bottle of wine. Only 7 (seven) barrels of this holy juice were produced, so you’ll blink and -the wine will be gone! —– Gorgeous color and amazing aromas of white peaches, quince and honeysuckle jump out of the glass. This is one the “best” made Chardonnays I have tasted in years! The wine is full in body, concentrated and well-balanced with a succulent texture. A touch of citrus and minerality and a touch of nuttiness lingers from the mid-palate into a long lasting finish. This is Chardonnay that can be drunk now, and will age nicely!

97 Point Napa Cabernet for only $61.99

Kirk Venge has been crafting wine since he was a little child under the tutelage of his dad Nils Vegne.  Kirk has wowed us with many great wines (Macauley, Honeycutt, Jax, Igneous, Venge, Trespass, etc)  Really, his dad told me that at pre-school age he knew Kirk was going to be winemaker.

In a recent blind tasting of 10 big-name Napa Cabernets this small producer received a 97 Point rating from the 42 people panel. It beat out wines like Opus One, Chateau Montelena, Cliff Lede, Von Strasser Reserve, Morlet, Gemstone, Caymus, Forman & Carter “Beckstoffer” To Kalon.

The 2010 Beau Vigne Romeo (82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot & 1% Petit Verdot), is a thrill from the first pour. This wine begins with a beautiful color of purple and black hues that cloak the glass. The aromatics of blackberry, cassis, black cherry and toasty oak are just what you would come to expect from a complex cabernet. This wine exhibits hints of tobacco leaf and a kiss of French Oak. The mouth feel of this Cabernet is very youthful and fresh. Bright red fruits are warmed by a warm wrap of vanilla and white chocolate. Several sensations of maraschino cherries, black licorice, and savory oak spices come to mind. The mid-palate is explosive with minerality and firm tannins that carry it to the back palate.

The 2010 Amendment XXI begins with plush warmth and roundness in the nose. This Merlot/Cabernet blend has notes of black cherry, blackberry briar, and is backed by a hint spice. The lush, but silky palate opens up to a fresh and bountiful array of exotic red  berries, strawberry and plums. It is soft and delivers seamlessly, but there is a serious side to the wine in its finish that arrives with agreeable tannins.

Jeff Pisoni’s amazing Pinot Noir!

Fort Ross Vineyard & Winery

Fort Ross vineyardNestled on a sunny coastal ridge, overlooking the Pacific Ocean a mile below, the “True Sonoma Coast” vineyard is one of the closest, if not the closest, to the ocean in all of California. From the vineyard you can see the breaking surf and the misty silhouettes of Bodega Head and Pt. Reyes far below. The vineyard’s high elevation above the coastal fog and its proximity to the ocean provide a gentle, sunny and temperate climate that has proved to be very favorable for the slow and even ripening of Burgundian varietals. Fort Ross Vineyard has just received wonderful news — the establishment of the FORT ROSS-SEAVIEW AVA, a limited mountainous area overlooking the Pacific Ocean, north of the Russian River that was carved out of the expansive Sonoma Coast AVA. With Jeff Pisoni at the helm since 2009 this winery has gone from good to outstanding!

The 2009 is a very serious wine.  The wine shows what Jeff Pisoni is all about.  The wine shows structure, balance and power.  On the nose one is greeted by exotic red stone fruit and hints of crushed rocks . On the palate this well-crafted wine shows its great potential of black cherries, and plums, licorice and a touch of herbs and mint.  The wine is gorgeous and complex and bottled unfined and unfiltered. It tastes a lot more expensive than its price tag!

Stunning Old Vine Zinfandel

Limerick Lane

Limerick Lane is a thirty acre estate located in the north east corner of the Russian River Appellation just south of the town of Healdsburg.  The estate was first planted to grapes in 1910 by the Del Fava family and the original homestead where Mario Del Fava was born is where the current owner lives with his wife and three children In the mid 70’s, the estate was sold to the Collins family. Brothers Mike and Tom Collins brought incredible passion and enthusiasm to the property selling the grapes as vineyard designates to several well-known local wineries.  In 2009, Mike Collins approached sold the winery to the current owners and they immediately turned it into an even better producer.  The current vintage is just an example of what we can expect from Limerick Lane in the future.

This 2010 Zin is a wine that I would very much define as “rustic” in style. It is balanced, chewy, and absolutely chock full of texture…very much a complete wine as opposed to a jar of jam. Made with the intention of complimenting food, not dominating it, this Zin exhibits a spectrum of flavors including red fruits like strawberries and raspberries as well as some riper black fruit flavors such as blackberries and plums.  The fruit flavors in the wine are complemented by a good dose of chewy tannins, a hint of oak, and great acidity. This wine is comprised of 60% Limerick Lane estate grown fruit. The balance of the fruit comes from 2 vineyards: The Crossroads vineyard on West Dry Creek Rd and the 100 year old Sodini vineyard just down the street on Limerick Lane. Textured, layered, rich and complex yet appropriately balanced, this is a Zinfandel that hearkens back to the days of Italian immigrants and field blends.  It is reflective of a time when Zinfandel was known for much more than just a fruit and is very much a product of the unique growing conditions at Limerick Lane.

Bridesmaid Proprietary Red is for real in blind tasting!

Bridesmaid Wines

In a recent blind tasting of 2008 Proprietary Red blends the modestly priced Bridesmaid Red beat out some very well-regarded names in Napa.

The line-up included:

  • Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red (93 Pts Parker $130.00)
  • Opus One (92 Pts WS $ 200.00)
  • Arietta Proprietary Red H Block Hudson (95 Pts Parker $120.00)
  • Behrens & Hitchcock Ode To Picasso Proprietary Red  (94 Pts Parker $75.00)
  • Coup de Foudre 37 2 Cuvee (94 Pts Parker $ $95.00)
  • Dominus Napanook (93 Points Parker $50.00)
  • Gemstone Proprietary Red Wine (94 Pts Parker $130.00)
  • Bridesmaid Proprietary Red (94 Pts GWC $39.99)

The Bridesmaid name comes from the more serious analogy between a First Growth Bordeaux and the next level Appellation blend. Pam and Drew took the more whimsical aisle of what the Bride is to the Bridesmaid: left of center, sexy and totally available! Pam Starr garnered her inspiration for this wine while working at such celebrated wineries as Spottswoode, Gemstone, and now her own label, Crocker & Starr. Meanwhile, Drew Neiman has kept his winemaking skills sharp with the creation of Neiman Cellars and stints at Newton, Kongsgaard, and Chateau Boswell.

Blue and red make purple, right?!  Dense color for the eyes and profuse berries and flowers greet the nose. Black cherry, blueberry, red rose petals, pipe tobacco all knit together for this big juicy mouthful. Oh so smooth finish with lots of length. All in this is a very seductive wine.

The nose shows gorgeous aromas of cranberries, mint, raspberries and a hint of fragrant spice. On the palate this well-balanced, medium to full-bodied and striking wine (aged in neutral French oak barrels) shows great body, lots of juice and bright clean flavors. Beautiful flavors of black currant, anise, a touch of leather and spice linger on into the silky finish of this little gem. The wine reminds me of a Chinon from the Loire Valley.
