Paul Hobbs masterminds yet another gem!

Laird Family Estate

The Laird Family is the largest (vineyard) land owner in the Napa Valley with over 2500 acres, but only produce a very small amount of wine themselves under the tutelage of Paul Hobbs. The Laird grapes (various designated vineyards) are used by wineries such as Levendi, Nickel & Nickel, Tor, and Kapcsandy, to name a few.

This Cabernet based blend will wow you from the start. Bright purple gemstone in color. On the nose are wonderful aromatics of dark red cherry and raspberry as well as a whiff of toasty vanilla. On the palate this full-bodied red blend offers an array of rich flavors – loaded with chocolate, boysenberry and caramelized plums on the mid palate, leading into a complex silky smooth finish with just a hint of spice.

99 Point winemaker introduces Linked 2007 Cabernet

Luc MorletLuc Morlet has yet another accolade to his name, the new Linked 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon.  Only 118 cases of this new venture were produced. Just around the bend from Peter Michael’s stomping grounds, this new wine is poised to become a reference point for Knights Valley. Dense, mouth‐coating flavors of dark fruits, chocolate and cassis with a decadent wood flourish to the finish. If someone could have told you about something like Peter Michael Les Pavots while you could still get it, youʹd thank them, right?  Luc uses the fruit from this vineyard for his (96 point Parker rated) Moret Mon Chevalier.  For those not familiar with Luc Morlet, he also makes the wines for Peter Michael, Carte Blanche, Vineyard 7 & 8, Cabaud, and of course his own Morlet label.

Keeping true to the vineyard, this wine is made with 100% Estate Cabernet Sauvignon.  It is a powerful wine that showcases the balance of power and elegance. A first glance at the deep, dark ruby color fringed with mahogany suggests a wine of great character and complexity. The nose is redolent of intense, concentrated red and black fruit with hints of chocolate and tobacco, finely‐framed by delicate oak. Each sip reveals a new flavor dimension; black currant, blueberry, dark Bing cherry and plum mingle with tobacco, leather, cocoa, black pepper, and touches of spice. Supple tannins dance around balanced acidity to give a silken finish that goes on and on.

A smooth entry leads to flavors of sweet blackberries, raspberries, milk chocolate, espresso and fig.  Full-bodied, well balanced. 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Black Cordon Vineyard at the base of Mt. Veeder. This 9-acre vineyard sits just above one of the top sources for Opus One and Harlan and below O’Shaughnessy’s Mt. Veeder property. With Paul Hobbs as your Winemaker, the wines show the pedigree, character, quality and complexity associated with all of Paul’s projects. This surely over performs for $45 on the shelf.  Only 494 cases made. There is no doubt that this wine will be long lived. I would decant in the near term but keep a few in the cellar because I believe this wine is going to be very interesting as it ages.

This wine is awesome! It is a blend of both young and old vines from the best three blocks of this vineyard: G, N,& Q. (I’m not sure when we’ll stop calling the ‘young vines’ young, they are now 15 years old…). This combination of age adds layers of complexity to the finished cuvee: the old vines give depth and sophistication, the young vines add freshness, richness, and youthful exuberance. Dense, deep red in color. This great wine finishes with dusty tannins, violets, spice and dark cherries. 195 cases produced.

This is the first bottling of the famous old-vine ‘Q Block’ from Tyler, and it is stunning. The Q Block shares the same slope and soil as the N Block, but was planted to slightly different material back in 1973 and sits upslope from N Block. 100% Pommard clone, this wine has an amazing color, aroma and intensity.  It is a Pinot on steroids (don’t like to make fun of the steroids part). One would have assumed the steeper aspect would result in a more tannic wine than the N Block. Surprisingly, this wine is the more feminine of the two. Texture of Silk, Citrus, Earth, Soft Tannin, Dark Red Fruit, and a touch of vanilla. Only 70 cases produced!

Value Cabernet blend stuns many!

Field Recordings is 29-year old winemaker Andrew Jones’ personal catalog of the people and places he values most. Having stood in just about every vineyard on the Central Coast, he has a keen eye for diamonds in the rough: sites that are unknown or under-appreciated but hold enormous untapped potential. As friendships are made and opportunities are embraced, Andrew produces small quantities of soulful wine from these unusual, quiet vineyards.

This blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Petit Verdot and 16% Malbec from the Happy Canyon region in Santa Barbara will knock your socks off. Only 150 cases of this little gem were produced.

The wine’s aroma is layered with notes of red currant, a whiff of chocolate and violets. On the palate this medium to full bodied red blend offers a plush mouthfeel  with black cherries, violets, kirsch and crème de cassis joinging notes of tobacco and cola. This is truly a California Bordeaux blend.

Page winery turns another page with TWO stunning releases!

Page Wine Cellars

Bryan Page and I met in 1998 when I tasted his first vintage 1997 Proprietary Red. Since then many of our customers have become groupies of this well-priced Napa winery. Bryan’s production is very limited as he focuses on quality and not quantity.

This proprietary Red Blend (55% Cabernet Franc; 37% Cabernet Sauvignon; 8% Petit Verdot) has a gorgeous purple hue, a beautiful nose of blackberries and cassis intermixed with some chocolate and espresso and a touch of anise. Full in body, it is a well-balanced stunner that will evolve nicely. Very smooth on both mid-palate and finish. This wine offers gobs of black stone fruit with hints of chocolate and anise on the mid-palate leading into a long, complex but silky finish. 112 cases produced.

As of the 2011 vintage, the Sauvignon Blanc will now be a proprietary blend as Bryan is adding a little more Semillon to the blend (80 SB and 20 Semillon). This 2011 is gorgeously textured with a bright aroma of melon, ripe pears and honeysuckle on the nose. On the palate this medium bodied white blend shows more of its personality and offers great flavors of tropical fruit, a touch of minerality and a long tropical/mineral finish. 186 cases produced.

Small producer shows the big guys how it is done.

Boheme

In a recent blind tasting of 2009 Pinot Noir, this 97 case production really turned heads when it gave the big guys a run for their money. The lineup consisted of:

  • Donum (96  WS, $90.00)
  • Rochioli Little Hill (96  WS $80.00)
  • Beaux Freres Ribbon Ridge (95  WS $90.00)
  • Kosta Browne Kanzler (95 WS $85.00)
  • Peter Michael Clos due Ciel (95 WS $125.00)
  • Siduri Pisoni (95 Pt WS $60.00)
  • Paul Hobbs Lindsay (94 Pt WS $ 85.00)

With a group of 35 tasters, I could say that this was a fair assessment. Not only did Boheme come in first, it also got a much higher average price than its actual cost. The average price “guessed” was $64.00.

Winemaker, Kurt Beitler, is a genius winemaker, meticulous farmer, and passionate believer in creating wines that express their depth and complexity with minimal intervention. Kurt grew up around Caymus, being mentored by his uncle, Chuck Wagner, and has unending amounts of passion.  He farms his own vineyards and does everything possible in the vineyard so the winemaking is completely hands on.

Only 97 cases of this amazing Pinot Noir were produced, and that is a few hundred short of what we could sell, because it is THAT good! Aroma of dusty cherries, plums and evergreen. The mouthfeel is elegant and lush, with flavors of dark cherries, red raspberries, clove, cinnamon, and tea. The lengthy finish is complex and inviting.

99 Point winemaker does it again!

Cabaud

Luc Morlet has been on a roll as of late, and this latest venture “Cabaud” is just one of the many accolades this great winemaker can add to his portfolio.  Luc who was born in France, but is known for his success at Peter Michael Newton, Staglin, Carte Blanche, Vineyard 7 & 8, his own Morlet label and of course the Cabaud Wines.

Passionate for both the expression of the various California terroirs, as well as the continuous pursuit of the ultimate quality, Luc calls his winemaking philosophy “neo-classical laissez-faire without compromise.” His is a non-interventionist winemaking style driven by an ongoing search for quality improvement. With over two decades of vintages under his belt (he worked 9 years in France, before coming to California), and with his own zest for innovation, Luc uses century old principles and classic Burgundy and Bordeaux methods, while adapting to California’s natural conditions

“Mon Hommage” translates to “My Tribute” and that is what the Cabauds want to share with us. Great wine, great land, great winemaker (Luc Morlet) and the love for the Napa Valley and Saint Helena!

This wine offers a very intense aromatic boost of black cherries and blueberries with a whiff of white tobacco on the nose.  Fleshy and unctuous flavors of red and black stone fruit roll over a perfectly balanced body.  Hints of crème de cassis and a touch toasty vanilla intermingle gorgeously on this mid-palate of this refined giant!  The “finale” offers up a long lingering finish with soft and silky tannins.
