Sommelier Special – 2007 Alondra Cabernet

John Lancaster and Robert PerkinsAlondra is Spanish for Skylark, the wine company established by my long time friends John Lancaster and Robert Perkins, who run the wine program at Boulevard Restaurant in San Francisco.

During his tenure at Boulevard, John has traveled extensively throughout the world’s wine regions studying wine production and is also a professional wine judge and consultant. John and I judged together for the International Wine Competition.

Robert has been a wine consultant for several Bay Area restaurants. He has also worked hands-on in production at several small wineries including Nalle, Scherrer and Sean Thackrey. For the past nine years he has been a sommelier at Greens in San Francisco, Willowside Café in Sonoma and at Boulevard Restaurant.

Alondra 2007 CabernetThis is a secretive wine! We are not allowed to tell you where the fruit comes from, but I can tell you that it has to do with a successful management career in the NFL and some Super Bowl wins! I can tell you that the source is an amazing 10 acre site in the Yountville district of Napa Valley. The Alondra winemakers crafted an amazing, well-priced wine from this stunning vineyard source! On the nose one is greeted by gobs of black currant, cassis and cocoa powder aromas. On the palate this lush, densely concentrated wine classic Napa Valley black stone fruit with a touch of chocolate and a touch of spice. The palate is expressive and flavorful, with the rich fruit profile beautifully balanced by gravelly earth and refined, but silky tannins. With a production of 200 cases, I can tell you that this one will not last long!
